Ford Ka in general
Advantages: Fun to drive, cheap to buy & run
Disadvantages: Rust bucket, it will betray you!
I bought my Ford Ka from new in 2002. Don't get me wrong, I loved to drive her, she was nippy around town and I could fit into just about any parking space. She was economical on fuel, the insurance was cheap, the road tax was cheap but unfortunately that's where the positives end.
She failed every single MOT! Not on silly stuff either, I'm talking suspension, rust on the underside, the petrol tank rusting from the inside, rust on the sills, rust rust rust! I took her for an MOT in May and the repairs alone would have cost me over £900, after speaking to my trustworthy mechanic, he advised that if I had the repairs done, I would only have the same issues again next year.
Bearing in mind that an 8 year old Ford Ka in pristine condition was only worth £1800 book price (and mine wasn't exactly pristine with a £900 repair bill) I decided that she was a bit too high maintenence for my liking and off she went to the car auction. I have to admit that I shed a few tears because I loved that car but (and I know this sounds a little odd) she betrayed me!!
Having read up a little on Ka's since the "betrayal" they are well known for a lot of problems that my car had and I can only suggest that if you are considering purchasing a Ford Ka that you thoroughly do your research and get others opinions. My story seems to be quite similar to other Ford Ka owners. However if you are happy with a car which is fun to drive and is cheap to buy & run and don't expect it to last more than 8 years from new, then I say go for it! Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed!
