I had the two year itch, my Punto had done me proud but I was looking at the number plates and feeling deflated that my car was now 7 years old. It was 2008 and my Punto was a fantastic car, passed every mot and had only needed a new bulb but my 20 year old head wanted a newer car, it goves an impression of money (or so I thought).
I had my family on the hunt searching high and low through internet pages and news papers, I cannot count how many garages I trawled around but for my £2000 budget plus a car in part ex I could not find anything newer.
My dad told me about the KA he saw, how it was 2 and a half years old and in my budget. I shook my head, all I heard about these cars were that hairdressers drove them and they were dodgier than a tin of beans rattling their way down the road.
I gave her a chance and went down to the garage giving her a little test drive. She was pocket perfect handling a little heavy but had a shiny exterior and a cute little expression to match.
I must say that this car is reliable, through rain, snow and deep freezes the engine still starts first time like a dream and now little 'willow' is 7 years old.
Engine 1295cc with a 60 bhp and a maximum speed of 96mph.
The car is able to fit in four average sized adults and still drive very well. The alternator had needed to be changed twice but apart from that the car is great value for money. The boot is small but it is suitable for a trip to the supermarket for a couple or small family.
The doors remind me of aeroplane wings opening very wide allowing for the most awkward of car exiters to get out with style.
The bumpers on my model are a plastic grey which yes may be ugly to some but to me they are great as any tiny knocks or scratches do not show up!
The lights create the lady bug image and look sleek fitting into the body shape. The only issue is that when the bulbs need changing you end up with bruised hands as the spaces are very tiny; unless you take the whole unit out.
The seats are firm but do not move up or do anything other than back, forward and tilt. The leg space is a little small but for the size of the car this is to be expected and at 5'4" this is fine for me.
The dashboard is very curvy and contemporary with a little shelf just above the glove box. The shelf is ideal for your phones or anything which does not want to slip when driving, the glove box is decietfully spacious and can hold at least 6 CDs plus cleaning cloths.
The heating system is fantastic in the winter but in the summer there becomes a problem as the system does not shut off and causes you to boil unless the windows are open.
The original stereo was a tape player and as I do not have any tapes I put in my own CD player and fascia which can be picked up cheaply on Ebay. The wiring was easy enough to do as I am a complete amateur. The speakers are quite poor and sound a little tinny so I bought some extra which were fitted into the boot and the sound quality is increased no end.
It is hard to get used to the lack of rev counter or engine temperature gauge but at the turn of a key the engine strokes up well and runs quickly no matter what the weather. The power is very good especially for overtaking. The power steering is heavier than some models but in the ice and standing water the car does feel safer.
The car is often known as a go kart and handles corners brilliantly and smoothly. The economy is great with a petrol consumption of around 50 mpg. Overall in the past 5 years the car has only had two alternator changes and the obvious tyre replacements. The brakes are easy to change yourself as well as the bulbs and windscreen wipers. The only major negative is the body work and how easily it can rust but after being driven into it has held up well, actually better than our second car.
A highly recommended relaible car costing £3350 5 years ago.
Summary: A great little run around for anyone needing reliability
