Unlike many cars in our garage, you don't end up approaching the Ford Ka, wondering: "Er, is this the Primera or the Carina?" Instead you think: "This could be a laugh." And it is... most of the time.

Unlike most small non-GTi cars, it really gets stuck into corners. Deathly slow mini-roundabouts you'd barely noticed before become wrist-flicking fun as the Ka cuts cleanly through them. Of course you're not going that fast - it just feels like it, as the Ka is so tiny and responsive.

But does its size make cutting through city traffic any easier? Well, on a 50-minute commute, there were a couple of streets where parked cars on the left often mean queuing behind a long line of traffic turning right, when you want to go straight on. With the Ka, as with any small car, we squeezed through and were on our merry way. It's also easy to park and needs only a little space.

And when the traffic does get sticky, the Ka is so easy to drive thanks to its light gearchange and clutch. It's deceptively spacious inside, so as long as there's no-one in the back, even a six-foot driver will have room to spare. The funky, user-friendly interior design feels fresh and innovative, but the boot is not massive.

The Ka 2 equipment list is extensive, with power steering, electric windows and central locking all standard. But two optional extras - air conditioning and a CD-player - have contributed to making ours even more pleasant to be inside.
