Advantages: Pretty reliable for something thats not Japanese, Lots of strong pulling power and good looks

Disadvantages: Ford may not be for everyone, MPG is maybe not class leading

After sitting at home one day remembering all the cars I have owned in the past one car really sprung to mind.
Back in 2005 I bought a 1997 Ford Mondeo ST24 with the RSAP ( Rally Sport Appearance Package ) Kit with 89,000 miles for about £2000, I actually only intended to keep it for a couple of months as I thought I would be moving overseas within a couple of months and was also driving 110 Miles a day to work and back and knew it would kill me in petrol if I kept it long term, the reason I bought it was I always had wanted one and having previously had a MK2 Mondeo ( 1.8TD ) knew that Mondeo's could be reliable, and even if there were problems they could be fixed relatively inexpensively.

The 2.5 Duratec V6 produces 170 BHP and posts an official 0-62 time of 8 Seconds, which may not seem that impressive and you can buy many cheaper smaller cars with smaller engines and achieve the same kind of time, but its past 62MPH that it really comes alive, where alot of cars with smaller engines get to 60 quick enough they start to lose momentum not long after, this car doesn't suffer from that and pulls like a train and continues to do so until you ( Supposedly although I never tried...honest ) reach its top speed of 139MPH, also being a Mondeo for its class it handles very well and takes corners more nimbly than its supposed to and outclasses other rivals in its class ( Vectra, Xantia etc ) for handling.

Now MPG is obviously an issue when you have a car of this size and power, official figures place it at 29 which is to be expected for something with a 2.5V6, however there were times driving on the motorway to work where I would get close to 40 !! not bad really.

I put about 30,000 miles on my car in a year and a half as my intended move overseas was delayed by a year, although I was tempted to sell the car I never did and continued to use it for the long journey as I was addicted to the 2.5V6 and couldn't see myself going down to a diesel or a smaller engine, and maintenence costs were surprisingly low for its age and the driving I was doing, in the time I had it besides some minor electrical stuff ( Radio stopped working, power window motor needed replacing, all fixed relatively cheaply ) and the routine oil changes and plug changes It really didn't cost me that much at all.

If you're looking for something fuel efficient then this isn't for you, if you're looking for something to just drive to the supermarket and back, this isn't for you, but if you're looking for something thats practical, reliable and FAST then this is a great car, especially as now you can pick them up for less than I paid and get something with less miles and alot newer.

If you like fast fords, and you're on a budget, then you're in for a treat

Summary: A good cheap way to get power and into a fast ford
