Advantages: Bold style, good value

Disadvantages: Cheap build, unresponsive V6 and lazy transmission

I had a 2007 Mustang Cabrio V6 with an automatic transmission at my disposal for a week or so. During that week I clocked up a good thousand miles of highway and minor road driving, both with the hood up and down.

The car's performance was lethargic for a sports car. This vehicle trades on its appearance, so perhaps it's no bad thing that you'll take off from the lights pretty slowly if you want to make sure everyone can see you. Fuel economy was poor as well, overall I wasn't impressed with the rather slow-witted and unresponsive engine and transmission. I hope that the manual and other engines make up for this disappointing entry level model.

The interior is drowning in cheap plastic. I'm guessing the seats were trimmed in a cheap leather substitute, because they were slippery and nasty. However the overall design is respectable, a bit of fake chrome here and there, and a clear, bold layout does at least do the whole futuristic-retro look justice. Once again this is a car that looks the part but which falls desperately short when you get up close.

Top down, it's a classic cruiser. With the hood up, it's a manageable beast that keeps the elements out. Sudden rainstorms weren't a problem, the power hood worked well and there wasn't excessive road or wind noise. Just don't expect the Germanic perfection of up market Audi or BMW cabriolets and you won't be disappointed.

Summary: A car for posing, not for driving
