Advantages: Looks, Power, Classic

Disadvantages: Price, Only a few real ones around

I am lucky enough to have driven one of the few original Ford Mustangs in Britain. The Mustang is a classic American muscle car, it's power is simply outrageous, and it looks stunning. The modern car is nothing like the classic, none of the aggressive looks of the original can be seen in the design of the modern Ford.

The car I drove was red/white with a huge central cooling air intake vent on the front bonnet. Inside black leather and just about everything is chrome. The steering wheel is made from what at first seemed to be rather flimsy wood. The car is seats five, in theory, and is a three door. The car is extremely comfortable, but the interior is quite 'cheap'. The dash is totally made from black plastic. There's a big rev counter mounted on the dashboard.

Starting the car takes several pumps of the accelerator but after that it starts at first attempt. As it fires up the sound is almost deafening as the twin pipes blast into life. Not all people are a fan of 'noisy' cars but this car doesn't just grunt away. At low revs a sporty gurgle and rumble emits from the pipes, at high revs the car positively screams.

The power of the car is extreme, the only thing it lacks is control. In the wet I was told the wheels spin if you try to accelerate even from a standstill in top gear. The car roars through the gears, a very big, very heavy car, with a serious amount of power. The standard combination for an American sports car.

Realistically I would have to say that anyone reading this, like me, hasn't got a chance in hell of owning an original Mustang. But if you happen to be a millionaire with a love of classic cars, and come across one for sale, I would buy it. The Mustang was one of the best cars I've ever driven; power, looks, it's an excellent car. There are hundreds of fakes around, but I'm glad to say I've experienced an original.

Oh and I have driven a 2 door non-fast-back 6 cylinder version (in 1975) and it were crap. Dead steering and little power. A later 'Boss Mustang' than I was driven in lacked the classic lines but at least had V8 power.

Sorry but I am not convinced and don't join in the adulation given below.

If you knew anything about the Mustang, you would know that there were at least 2 body styles and a range of engines and not all were the fast-back-road-burners that St. McQueen used in 'Bullit'.

Lucky you! A car I have enviously looked upon, but not driven. I have to admit that, like doochunk, I tend to think of safety features now we have them. Have you noticed how much better for the power the brakes of the newer cars are?
