I just bought myself an F reg (1989) orion ghia 1.6i last weekend for £600. What a bargain! It's been fully done up with body kit, CD player, sound system, performance exhaust etc. etc. etc. which proves you can pick up a quality orion for pennies!
Unfortunatly the clutch has just gone but you can pick up a full orion clutch AND have it fitted for £50.
The orion ghia has the same engine as an escort XR3i but because the thieves prefer the XR3i, the insurance is cheaper!
At a good 48mpg the orion ghia makes as good a family car as it does a boy racer machine. Remember though all you boy racers... older cars mean older shells mean rustier cars. Be carefull out there but to be honest I haven't had TOO much problems with rust so far.

Watch out for:

Blue smoke from the exhaust
Fake engine plates
White flakes in the oil

48mph makes good family car, 130mph makes good nut case machine. My advice, stick to the family car side because once you have alloys on an orion it get HEAVY!
