To Celebrate its 50th anniversary Honda commissioned the S2000, its first FR drive sports car since the 1965 S800. With a classic long bonnet look yet modern styling touches the S2000 is a very impressive looking Sportster. I have always been very impressed by the engineering quality of Honda cars. So would it be as impressive to drive as it looked, well here are some statistics:
Honda S2000 Type V
Power: 246bhp/8300rpm
Torque: 22.20kgf.m/7500rpm
Engine: 1997cc, FR (L4 DOHC)
Weight: 1260kg
Now to the racing driver these are not that impressive but for social use these are perfectly acceptable figures especially when you see the 25500 price tag. Mechanically the car bristles with hi-tech gadgets that work to produce more power to liter than any Naturally Aspirated car. The 2 liter 16 valve engine with Limited Slip Differential and Honda’s aluminum VTEC variable valve timing and lift are the perfect example of why I am a fan of Hondas engineering.
The model I test-drove came with a sporty, red leather interior. The driving position is quite low and gives a very racy feel, making the car feel like it is traveling faster than it actually is. The beautifully crafted aluminum Gear knob gave very smooth gear shifting and the car accelerates well through transmission. The dashboard has a sheik, modern interface with digital readout or speed and revs. The POWERFUL stereo system is impressive and the car also includes air conditioning and a foldaway cover. The handling is reasonable but not as impressive as the rest of the car.
For the racing enthusiast well the braking is superb but other than that this car is a little disappointing, there is not as much speed as you would expect and currently little upgrade potential. The engine sounds smooth but not as powerful as I had hoped and the handling is not as impressive as expected.
In short i wouldn’t buy this car to take it racing, but it is
definitely and excellent choice for a personal sportscar because of its excellent price, impressive interior and engine tweaking.
Enjoy.
