Bought a 2001 2,5 TD Cherokee Sport not knowing what to expect. Closed my eyes and did the deal. It had 192000 km on the clock and I was warned about fuel costs , expensive repairs , etc by a few people. None of them ever owned a Jeep so their opinions were discarded. In 2 years the belt pulley broke and cost me R2900.00 to repair. (AGENTS WOULD HAVE COST R10000.00). This is the most enjoyable and reliable wheels I've ever owned. Fuel consumption of almost 13kms / litre is brilliant. It is a no nonsense , tough and brilliant vehicle. I now understand the cliche "It's a Jeep thing". Then again unless you own one you will never know.
Jeep is a name that most people recognise as the producers of quality 4x4s. I had a 2000 reg cherokee until recently and found it to be a fantastic card in many areas. With all terrain tyres the jeep was prety capable off road, and with a 2.5TD engine could pull over its own weight easily. In fact whilst towing another car it can be easy to forget its there as setting off is so easy, it would often surprise me when i looked in the rear view mirror to see my other car (on an A frame) right behind me!
Boot space is quite good, but the spare wheel in the back takes up a lot of space, mounted spare on the door would have been better, but the door opens upwards. The roof bars are extremely useful, and can carry a decent weight, i helpen move 3 peice suites with the 3 seater on the roof, and 2 chairs in a trailer.
Bad points were that it did use a lot of fuel, mine ran about 17mpg, but it took a lot of hammer from me and only had one breakdown, due to a broken driveshaft.
The car had pleany of toys, inc electric windows etc. The ride was comfortable, as it is more like sitting in a chair than a car is. The increased hight meant the view of the road was far superior, as you could see over other peoples bonnets when they were along side (of course they could see jack all!).
I highly reccommend this vehicle, they look and drive great. The increased running costs are worth it if you tow often. Probably no good if you just commute to and from work though.
i own a 2001 cherokee orvis .the car is very well built and totally reliable.. big and roomy yet retaining a sence of car feel about it. easy to park thanks to a good power steering set up and excellent all round vision. mine has every extra and is in mint condition having been dealer maintained all its life. the ride is good to firm and corners well without wallowing, the interior is well kitted out and comes with a alpine hifi and mission speakers as standard. iv been through deep water and mud and snow, it keeps going and never lets me down. the big scorpian pirellis are sure footed and the engine, being diesel is clean economical and very reliable, although it is important to get the heads serviced every 6000 miles. interior is very nice though you do need to stretch out on a long journey so leg room in the back can be a little tight. An honest good all rounder that is good looking reliable and holds its value. mine is a 2001 on an X, but id expect, with a full history to get at least 7k for it if i sold it.. great to own, go get a good one while you still can.. dated 3/11/2006 hf
