Disadvantages: petrol version is quite thirsty
We have this style VW Jetta as our main family car and it is absolutely fantastic. It is average for taxing and insuring as it has a mid range engine.
We have had the car from new, bought last year. VW Jettas arn't cheap but I think you get what you pay for. We bought the car in a diesel version as my partner does a lot of miles for work so it worked out to be more economical. The petrol version I think is faster but it will cost a lot more at the pump.
If you can afford to I wouldn't buy the standard version but one with a few extras, of which there are lots. I say this not just because it makes the car better and easier to drive but because it shouldnt drop in value as much.
There is so much room in these cars you can easily get 3 people in the back quite comfortably (i'm talking adults as well not children)
Thinking about children, there is a huge boot big enough for a buggy etc. or 2 large suitcases when going on holiday. The key also has a button on it which you press and the boot automatically pops open. Very useful when you have 2 handfulls of shopping and its raining!
We have a silver Jetta with black/grey interior. The best colour combo in my opinion. I would suggest buying from a dealer to protect yourself from any problems, although Jettas and VWs in general are pretty reliable cars.
Overall a nice car to drive and very practical for a family.
