Advantages: Excellent offroad, good looks, very well built

Disadvantages: Not the most comfortable car

The Land Rover Defender is Land Rover's first, and in lots of people's opinion, best 4x4 offroader made. It's a British icon.

The stylish has been around since it was first created, with very little change. It's slightly less boxy than it once was, but other than that it's pretty much unchanged. Inside (you have to climb up, which makes you feel like you're getting into a proper 4x4), it's a no-frills cabin, with few creature comforts. There are heated seats, but this is mainly because they are a necessity in places like the Arctic. There's a decent amount of legroom in both the front and the back.

This car is really built to go offroad, and this it excels. Weirdly, the Range Rover is, according to Land Rover, the better offroad car, but the Defender is so much more solid and you don't care about scratching the paintwork on passing twigs/rocks (you would on a £60,000 Range Rover). To engage low range you pull on a lever (no fancy buttons here), and overall it really is good offroad. On road tyres, it can climb muddy hills incredibly well, and ground clearance is very good. Defender's are built to last, and everything seems incredibly sturdy. The diesel engine has lots of torque, but little high end grunt, which is fine.

Comfort won't be a major factor for many defender buyers, and nor will refinement. However, it isn't that bad, and it's reasonably comfortable for journeys of an hour or so.

Overall, the Defender is an excellent car. It's an icon of the British motor industry, and is absolutely incredible offroad. If you're thinking of a no-frills offroader, here is your answer.

Summary: An excellent offroader
