I bought a '97 300TDi 18 months ago with 72,000 miles on the clock. Replaced the timing belt, water pump with P gasket as preventive maintenace. New alternator 10 months ago. As an all round vehicle I'm very impressed. I regulalrly make the journey between Devon and Manchester and it copes with everything really well. Once warmed up I don't see what the advantages are with the newer models as it's quite economical to run.

The driving position is what makes it for me as this is the real world we drive in. Visibility is panoramic and I find I can drive a long distance without tiring as was the situation in saloon cars.

I'd recommend buying one with a full service history and MOT and you should be off to a good start. Take it for a test drive and make sure it drives well.

I also replace oil and filters at 6000 miles and this keeps the engine sweet.
