Having test driven a diesel Freelander the TD4 immediately seemed more refined, quieter and much more eager. Transmission noise was considerably less which may have been the fault of the older model but generally the TD4 was quieter and smoother running. I have not yet tested fuel consumption but runs on a motorway were relaxed and controlled with good straight line stability and power available when needed.
