Mazda MX-5 1.8i: ... been driving my MX5 for over a year and a half now. It's not the fastest car around, neither is it the flashiest or most comfortable. What it is is a good-looking, cheap to run, no worries, fun car. I really don't understand why everybody doesn't buy one. Well, I do. There's some common gripes about these cars: There's not much boot space, so you can't carry 5 bags of sand home ...

npinney Mazda 323 (1989-94)
... have a Mazda 323 GLXI 1.6 with ABS (K reg). I bought it second-hand 3 years ago and love it. I paid £3990 for it in April 1999. It has never let me down and cost me very little in repairs. I have had the usual tyres and bulbs to replace and a new battery and exhaust but the only major work has been the drive shaft on one side. The other one now needs replacing as well (a year on). It has done 122,000 miles so far and still starts first time every time and runs superbly. The seat cloth design is a little tacky and outdated but is not a big issue. The car has electric sun-roof that not only opens on a tilt but opens up completely, electric wing mirrors, electric...

... 3 years and 41,000 miles, I'm thinking of trading in my Mazda 626 for a new model. But what should I buy - stick with the same marque or opt for something a little different? To help me make up my mind I've been reflecting on my experience with this car: the good, the bad and the indifferent. With two teenage children, a liking for camping holidays in France and a daily 10 mile commute to work through the city, I've subjected my car to a variety of tests. So what's been good? Quite a lot actually. For a start, the Mazda is roomy, with good space inside and a well-proportioned boot. It's not a luxury car by any means, but is comfortable e...

... good. Also, the dinky fold-up windblocker which comes standard on 1.8 cars is quite effective. Just another quick point about the soft top - since 1998 a heated glass rear window comes as standard. This is superior to the naff plastic windows that can still be found misting up on other cars twice the price of the humble '5. And the roof doesn't leak in bad weather either. Thanks Mazda! The achilles heel of the mk2 MX-5 is the engine. A very rough and ready unit, it doesn't provide much torque at the low end of the rev counter. To get any gutsy performance out of it you really need to keep the revs up - and even then expect to be taunted mercilessl...
