Advantages: Great car, Fast
Disadvantages: Expensive, uncomfortable
Ive only seen one MaClaren F1 on the road, or should I say around a tree, apart from the one I was a very nervous passenger in. I have sat in a couple in a Jaguar Showroom near my home but never allowed to bomb along the road. My friends dad is the head salesman at the GRange dealership and took me and him out for a spin in it and feel I should share some of my thoughts and experiences on it. Firstly, they dont make them anymore. If you want one, be prepared for a secondhand car. Expect to pay the wrong side of half a million for it too. Often fetching £650,000 for one car! Then again, you are buying the fastest production road car of all time... 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds!!! We never got to floor it to that extreme but my god, it moves. Ok, so here is my ride in the car described... Getting in is not the easiest of tasks. There are 3 seats! you all sit in a line with no back seat. Just engine for a headrest. The centre seat is reserved for the driver who sites slightly higher than the passengers. Better visibility in the mainly glass surrond. Stereo? Well it could have one but I doubt you would hear it over the engine. Noisy? Well yes it is. Its not honed with family saloon comforts. The interior is a mix of cream leather and carbon fibre. A pass over from its Maclaren parentage I expect. This is about the only creature comfort you will find. The ride quality is extremely stiff, no wobble as you take a roundabout form the suspension but equally no give when you hit a bump. Bad back sufferers should avoid. Outside it is basically sex on a stick. to look at it is a luxury the poor drivers dont have. Shame as its the most appealing feature for me. It is very low and has the makings of a modern Lamborghini to me. The difference here is it is very elegant and curvaceous. Not as linear as an Italian but not as rounded as a superchaged American Beast. A cross between the 2.
At the end of the day, these cars are wasted on the road. They are not practical road cars. The GTR Race car was built to rip up asphalt on race tracks the world over. That is what they do in the supercar championships. Normally out in front and in a league of their own, the only competition that can normally catch them is the purpose built racers. I say wasted as the only one I have seen other than the one I was in was wrapped around a tree and burst into flame. It happened one Sunday on my way back from Shropshire to my home in Chelmsford. Travelling along the A120, I was overtaken by an F1. I got all excited about much to my then girlfriend's annoyance. It flew past up Not far from Thaxted if you know the area. She said he was an idiot for doing that manouvre. He was. Obviously he was not so luch although I di not put 2 and 2 together until later. About 5 miles down the road, I saw something on fire against a tree and a hedge. Cars had stopped. I Thought it was just a fire of some sort. It was not until I got home that I found out there had been a crash causing tailbacks on the road and later found out it was an F1. Either it was a coincidence to have 2 cars there at the same time of that poor poser had written his car off. Unluckily he died as did the occupants. More fortunate was Rowan Atkinson. He owned an F1 and wrote it off. Luckily he survived. So if you do manage to own one, please be careful.
