Mini in general
Advantages: looks great, and is a fantastic driving experience
Disadvantages: A little difficult to get a baby car seat in and out of the back - the rear door is only on one side
I bought my first mini in about 1987 - it was a very second hand white mini Cooper and it felt small if stylish. I moved onto newer, slightly larger cars (nothing more than a hatch back) for many years but still missed the nippy style of the mini.
Last year I got the option to get a new car and as I'd been coveting the new mini since they had first been introduced we test drove one. In the interest of fairness I also test drove the new Ford Fiesta, the VW Polo and the Toyota Yaris. The Mini wiped the floor with them on every level - the nippiness and acceleration of the mini is fantastic for a start. It's fun to drive - nippy and quick but feels solid and stable on the motorway. The 6 gears make it easy to accelerate and the on board computer (I've got the Chilli accesory pack - the computer doesn't come as standard) tells you the optimum gear to be in when you're driving.
The car itself feels solid and as though it's made of quality materials and crafting. The other small cars I test drove felt slightly flimsy and plasticky in comparison. The doors shut with a satisfactory clunk and feel heavy to open and close (sometimes a bit too heavy - my Mum struggles to open the doors sometimes because of this.)
The audio system allows you to plug in an MP3 player as well as play CDs and the radio. The interior has a retro feel large speedometer in the centre of the dash although I found it distracting to look at so I have the speed displayed on the computer by the steering wheel.
I have the clubman model as I discovered I was expecting a baby when we were in the process of choosing a car. It is a bit more spacious than the cooper and I think it looks groovy - my Husband however says it looks a bit like a pet hearse! Although he does love the way it drives. It has been a bit of a struggle to get a 1st stage car seat in and out of the back - especially as it only has a rear door on one side. But the baby will move into a forward facing seat soon which should get easier.
Overall the car looks fantastic - I've got Chilli red with a black roof and black stripes down the front and it's lovely to drive.
Summary: Looks and drives fantasticly, but could do with 2 rear doors.
