I think I am an ideal candidate to be giving my opinion of the new mini, having never driven the old one, I won't make the comparisons and assumptions that many others do.
If like me you like to be the first person out in a new car that turns heads then the mini is for you. The looks are great. The features are neat, its comfortable and most of all very enjoyable to drive.
I think that the new mini does drive very similarly to a BMW 318i although it is a very different car all together. When sitting at the first set of traffic lights on my test drive I remember doing nothing other than being amazed by the features and fun factor of the interior, although some may find the dashboard slightly impractical. I say this because the only instrument directly behind the steering column is the rev counter, everything else is positioned in the center on the speedometer.
I personally think that the mini will have it’s biggest sales in drivers between 20-30 who like small sporty cars but without the shakes and rattles. I would definitely recommend the mini to friends that can fit the BMW budget, and I think that some of the first Mini’s off the production line will retain their value much longer than other models on the market.
I would also recommend a few of the options that are available especially air conditioning, and if you are a style freak there are some very nice exterior styling options already available.
I was so impressed by my test drive that I have already ordered my mini cooper, with lots of extras, which is due to be delivered in October 2001. Watch this space!
