Advantages: Style, comfort and the amount of times it simply comes in handy
Disadvantages: Big turning circle
Having been a drive of "hot hatches" for the last 14 years the time had come to accept I was getting too old for small, fast cars that made a lot of noise. Also I had to accept that my son and step daughter were getting to old to be able to sit in the back of a hot hatch and be comfortable.
So the time came to change car, after a lot of looking around (and not feeling quite old enough to buy an estate or stupid enough to buy a people carrier) I picked up a 2002 L200 4life with 17,000 warranted miles on the clock.
At first it took some getting use to, I am use to sitting a few inches off the floor in a car that handles well but with suspension made of stone. However it took only a couple of days to remember that I could go at round about are 40mph, and that I had to take a little more car when reversing in Tesco car park.
Lets make no mistake here this is a big truck, but the power steering make it drive as easy as most family cars. Being long wheel base the turning circle isn't so great, but again after a couple of drives it's something you're use to.
I got the basic "4life" model, so no leather, aircon or anything else, but the interior is functional, clean and no worse than a lot of higher priced cars.
There back seats of my double cab offer plenty of room for two adults to sit in comfort and the load bed is a decent size allowing me to collect half a ton of fire wood, carry a couple of bikes or even loads my sons quad onto it.
It's also worth mentioning that these pickups are classed as commercial vehicles so 6 month tax costs the same as medium sized car.
This really is a very practical family car, plenty of room inside, the elevated seating position makes you feel safe and that load bay is brilliant for camping, building work or even trips to ikea.
Summary: Really good pickup for work or play
