This was my partners car when I first met him and being the good girlfriend I am it then became mine too! We kept it for about two years after which we sold it for a more sensible, slightly cheaper to run BMW when we decided to get a house...anyway in the year we owned this car I had plenty of chance to go out in it and drive it myself....in particularly it was far more economical and cost effective for him to go to work in my car than his gas guzzler....I took on for the team and baby-sat the car often! Poor me : ( ....NOT!
A sunburnt orange Nissan 350z, 54-reg, with inbuilt Sat. Nav. and the GT spec. (Brembo Brake pack, full orange leather heated seats, sports suspension and low profile tyres with GT Alloys)
~Cost on the way to £30k brand new, with the release of the 370z and GT-R the value of this care has depreciated and you can now buy one for £8-15k thereabouts dependant on the age and condition.
~3.5l V6 Engine which does 0-60 in a little under 6 seconds
~Only does about 17mpg but has a top speed of 155mph and 276bhp...far from numbers to be scoffed at.
The car is really well-made and very sturdy, when you are sitting either in the driver's, or passenger's seat the car feel like a tough little tank...and not in a rubbish way, in safety tests the car has held up pretty well too, being quite a tough little thing, as it needs to be for the speed it can travel, and has numerous airbags throughout the inner chassis, curtain airbags, standard airbags, lower airbags...you get the picture. You would seem to be well protected in this car if you go into trouble! Also the seats are made to a very high standard and due to the sporty nature of the car, and in particularly as of the GT pack the seat cushion and secure you into place hugging you in all the right places. For some reason though the driver's seat is more comfortable then the passengers and is shaped slightly more precisely to offer the driver better lumbar support and leg support whilst on long journeys. As soon as you get in the car and close the doors you feel comfortable and safe : ) Continuing the beautiful experience that is owning one of these cars....turning the engine on! What a sound, when the engine engages the car releases a deep grumbling sound...kind of like an angry low thunder...glorious, I've heard various car at start up at numerous motor shows and the 350z has a rumble which would not look out of place alongside any similar higher spec. car! Many a time has Derby's 'Rumble of Lust' (as my partner fondly calls a closed tunnel in Derby's city centre) experienced the lusty rumblings of the threatening orange 350z with it's windows down echoing through it. Driving this car around on the road you are guaranteed to be noticed! Whilst my partner was driving and i was a passenger there were numerous times when we were stuck in traffic or slowly travelling through a town and a pedestrian or someone else in car would stop to chat to us about the car. Similarly when I was driving around in it, and sadly people thought it was mine, wow a 19 year old with one of these, I got numerous admiring glances from men and women alike. A part from being a bit of a posers car this car can perform and you can feel this when you drive it (I think James May refers to it as a slight twinge), the power under the bonnet can be felt whether you are driving around town, on the motorway or just sitting ticking the engine over, there seems to be so much more this car could do for you than that it is allowed on Britain's speed capped roads, the car simply begs to be taken on the autobahn! Something we never managed to do for it, but when I get my own...the cars dream will be fulfilled! One thing to be careful of with this car though, being rear-wheel drive it is quite fly-ty and quite aggressive. In the wet it is a bit of a devil to control even on relatively straight roads even in the dry on corners and innocently going round roundabouts you have to really drop your speed much lower tan you would usually to keep the cars back-end from bucking out...easily if you failed to respond to the cars untamed desire to throw it's rear end out you would end up out of control and in a spin on even the kindest of corners.
This car is beautiful to drive, with just enough danger to keep you interested and you can't say this car is not beautiful from the outside too. Inside it's similar story...
*THE CAR'S INTERIOR*
Although the interior inside the car is a black matte plastic is is tastefully done and finished to quite a high quality with silver trim. This interior is also quite hard wearing and on the majority does not tarnish or scratch easily. One exception is if you wear a ring whilst driving though, which can scratch the silver inlays on the steering wheel, gear stick and door handles after prolonged contact. It isn't something which happens too easily but it does happen. My partners car was a good example of one with very, very little damage of this nature however if you do plan on buying a used 350z this is one thing you should look out for when shopping. Another frequent interior problem is the seats themselves, which often become worn particular on the driver's side where you get in and out and rub the leather this can make the leather start to crack and although the leather is soft, thick and of a high quality over time this wear can be seen and may need to be professionally repaired, which isn't cheap.
The car has a good quality factory-fitted alarm, which is very loud and quite sensitive; under normal conditions though it won't go off in the wind or rain! Also the boot space in the car is surprisingly ample, whilst in ownership of the car we managed a 2 person camping trip in it, with luggage, shopping and holiday's! The boot is described by the manufacturer as having room for a good set of golf clubs and it definitely does, despite the fact that the entire back of the car, where you would expect back seats is full of very expensive Bose sound equipment! The stereo on this car has a fantastic base-y sound and being made by Bose one would expect high quality, the car has speakers all round and the head unit is finished to a good quality with the 6-disc CD changer in the passenger glove-box, a lot handier than it being in the boot! One problem we found with the stereo though though which we haven't found with cheaper units is that in really hot weather the CD player would skip and freeze up for a couple of seconds before continuing playback. When we approached the garage the car was bought from and mentioned this the receptionist hap-hazardly exclaimed 'oh, that happens all the time with those cars!'...look out for that too then, and maybe even expect it if you buy one of these cars. It seems there is nothing you can do to remedy this unless you decide to part with a lot more cash than the car already swipes.
I was told by my partner that when he went to buy this car, when he was 23, he rang a certain Nissan garage in Derby and booked a test drive for the following day. The next day upon turning up to the garage he was told by the salesman who he had booked the test-drive with and the manager of the showroom that he could not take this car out as they were too busy that day! One can only assume, that his age played a factor in this! Making various excuses and despite the fact that he had turned up for a pre-booked test-drive he was not allowed to take the car he was planning to buy, if he liked the drive, out...something along the lines of the sales staff had no desire to take a time-waster and a youngster whom they wrongly assumed could not afford a car like this out! Don't worry, after he purchased the car I made sure to go back to the garage with him to show them there missed commission!!!!
Overall this is a fantastic car for comfort, safety, appearances and quality. It's only downfall really is it's cost. Despite not being too expensive to buy nowadays second hand replacement parts, frequently changes rear-tyres and weekly fuel costs soon add up and although the car need actual repair work doing infrequently tyres and services are expensive and are necessary. I myself would not hesitate to have one of these again, if I had enough money around to keep it on the road, the good of this car easily outweighs the bad...this though, is not a relationship to be entered into lightly!
Summary: I would hesitate to have one of these again if I had the money
