I have to say, if you are a young driver looking for something to get you through your test and beyond, I couldn't recommend the ('older' style) Nissan Micra enough. My dad and sister both had the 'boxy' models and they just lasted them forever, so when I was looking for a starter car I decided that a Micra was the way to go. I currently have a 'bubble shaped' 1995 N-reg which I bought in 2005. In the last 4 years I haven't had to spend a penny on it to get it through it's MOT, despite doing the average 10,000 miles a year. I bought my beloved in January 2011, she is an R-reg 5dr 1.0ltr, bright turquoise blue and it was love at first sight purely because of her very unique colour. While my friends were being spoilt by their parents and getting new Fiat 500s and Ford KAs and Mini Clubmans, I settled for the humble micra. Being only £600 and at 96,000 miles on the clock I could not say no as she was in full working condition and I was a student on a very tight budget. Although this may not have the features and extras of many of the cars in its class such as electric windows which come as standard on al Fiat Punto's and Air Conditioning which come on some of the others. It has a certain character that the others don't have, despite going slowly, you feel like you are going along at a quite substantial speed. As one of my friends late fathers used to call his the silver Bullet!! This was my 1st car as a teenager and I was pleasantly surprised how good a car it was. The car itself was in excellent condition. It had no rust all and it was 10 years old. It was only a 3 door but to our amazement these was plenty of room in it and a half decent boot. I had many a trips to the coast with my friends in and there were no complaints on room. The engine was a 1.0 16v which was quite nippy and ran beautifully. It was dead easy to drive as it had power steering and it was so light. Parking was very easy as it was small and good visibility. The gears were very easy to change through, very smooth. It gave excellent mpg for a petrol engine. I could get 50mpg .  Read the complete review
