This is the review of the nissan note. My dad and my mom owns (and I am the co-driver) the 1.4l petrol nissan note. When explaining this car to people who have never seen it, I like to describe it as a nissan micra estate, as that is what it essentially is.
So, a brief overview.
Being a nissan, our family have found both of our nissans to be very reliable, without any breakdown in 3 years yet (between 2 cars, ones is 2003, other is 2004, both done around 50k mileage). These cars are real work horses, between my and my dad we have driven through snow, taken wooden pallets, done some very basic offroading (through fields on rain days), and stuff like that, and the car does fine. The only negative on this point is that changing the front lightbulb on this car is really tricky, and the first time i did it i cut my hand (but once you know how to do it, its not too bad).
So, what about costs? For a car of this size, it has very good mpg rates (we get i estimate around 30-40mpg), although this is balanced by the poor performance. Being such a large car with a 1.4l petrol, it does feel a bit slouchy sometimes (but this is more at motorway speeds). The only other cost is MOT/servicing rates, and this is the slightly painful part. Being japanese, I think the servicing is more expensive than alternative cars out there, as are the parts.
Performance: The car is a bit slouchy, which is pre-mentioned. Also, in the wet if the ground is slick, the front tyres have a tendency to wheel spin if you try to accelerate out say on a roundabout (i guess due to the weight at the back). The car also isnt the best aerodynamically at motorway speeds, and the car "bobbles" from side to side slightly. Its nothing that you can't handle, but its nothing like a mercedes C class or something like that. The car seats are also high off the ground, but the car never feels like its about to topple over, it feels well planted (but obviously its no ferrarri).
Comfort: The car is very comfortable due t its high seats. You do not feel like you have to climb in and out of the car, and the seats are good. In the back there are no real complaints, as the entire back seats can shuffle forwards and back (increasing or decreasing legroom at the expensive of boot space). Although it can be cramped when there are 5 of us and baggage for 1 weeks holiday.
Practicality. This is where this car excels. With the fact that the seats move forwards and back, the seats also fold flat, and can even be removed, meaning this car can sort of double up as a van (and me and my dad have used it as such). For a car of this size, it has a pretty impressive rear space, and honestly I am not sure how it could be topped. I gather that in the newer versions, there is a boot divider as well, meaning that you can serpate the boot into 2 halves.
This car is perfect for people who just want a car that goes from A-B, and does fine in city and motorway environments, but is much more suited for city and B road driving (the daily commute style of driving). It would really suit older people due to the higher driving position, and I have intentionally not reviewed the stying as firstly everyone has their own opinion on this matter, and secondly I think its one of those things no-one can tell you, you have to make your own mind.
Alternatives to this car might include the Honda jazz, but this is a bigger car, and can be bought cheaper with cheaper insurance. But then again, the Jazz is a better car, and has better interior, acceleration, and relaibility. The main downfall with this car interior is the lack of much in the way of gadgets. It has AC, a simple radio... and thats about your lot. It doesnt bother me much personally, but when the jazz offers a nicer sound system, its just a point worth making.
Thanks for reading this review
Summary: Good for people who just want a car
