I have had a Primera 2.0 SRi for 18 months now and what a belter it is. All the magazine reviews harp on about how dull it is, but if you want driving thrills this car is just fantastic. The handling is superb, and the steering is completely balanced. On twisty roads this car excels and never surprises. The power delivery is smooth and although the acceleration isn't blistering it's more than adequate. I do 70 miles round trip to work each day (my main reason for getting this car), and half of this is done on motorway/dual cariageway. The car just eats the miles and I never arrive feelig tired or stressed (unless the A14 has been a nightmare). The only real problem here is road noise. I find I have to turn the radio up quite loud to hear it comfortably. This is not usually a problem at lower speeds though. Servicing costs are about average I think. The service interval is 9000 miles and the cost has varied from £100 to £270 depending on the type of service required. I chose to go to a Nissan main dealer although you could probably get it done cheaper if you shop around. Fuel consumption is average for a car of this size. I get anywhere between 29 and 36 mpg depending on how I have been driving. The car has a 60 litre fuel tank, so I usually get about 360 miles per tank. Nothing (touch wood) has gone wrong with the car since I have had it. It has become one of the things in life that I know I can rely on. It's always there and it always works. In terms of space, the boot is huge. You could hold a rave inside it and no-one would notice. We recently laid a patio and I was amazed at the number of slabs and bags of cement I could lug around. For rear passengers it's not such a great story. The rear leg room is Ok, but not as good as you might expect from a car this size. The ride will at least be comfortable for your passengers though (as long as they are small). So, there you have it. The Ni

I've had one of these 5 door hatchbacks from new, and it's been a pleasure to drive throughout. The handling is superb, although the ride is quite firm. The 2.0 litre engine generates about 138bhp, but the car is lighter than some of it's competitors, so it seems more powerful, and acceleration is brisk, although the gearbox does not make much of an effort hiding the gear changes from you. Kickdown is effective, so overtaking is never a problem. There are 'sports' and 'snow' modes which can be activated by a button located, along with the seat heating controls, just below the handbrake. The sports mode does work, but, as expected takes it's toll on economy. It's not necessary to have it on full-time, as a kickdown will temporarily enter the mode. For those for whom this matters, the engine actually sounds good. Economy is average, being just over 30mpg for a 2.0 auto. I think the airconditioning affects the economy more than some other cars I've driven, but I'm not absolutely positive on that. Reliability is generally typically good, although I've had problems with the suspension 'top links', and I believe this is a not uncommon fault. However, it was not too costly to remedy. Looking under the bonnet is not a rewarding option, in terms of beauty. The engine is purely functional, and not presented as a nice tidy BMW/VW type component; Bits of wires here and there don't inspire confidence, but it hasn't failed yet (65K). Being an SE trim, the car gets the goodies we so badly need; Leather seats and sterring wheel, with the seats being heated for driver and passenger, electrically adjustable for driver. Electric windows all round, electric heated mirrors, air conditioning, and an RDS radio/cassette with boot-mounted CD-changer. There's also front fog lamps, central locking and alarm. Finally, the SE gets wider alloy wheels that the sporty model also has. The boot is
very large, and the rear seats are split/fold so large loads can be accommodated. Cabin quality is average to bland. Everything is where you'd expect it, although some of the switchgear is a bit cheap feeling. That said, it hasn't failed yet. The stereo controls are particularly logical, and all controls are within easy reach without leaning forward. I do not think you would buy the car purely for it's looks. The seats are extremely comfortable, and getting a good driving position is easy, Legroom in both back and front is good, although the ride suffers a bit. The window level is set quite high, giving an impression of tank-like safety. This doesn't affect visibility, which is good all-round. The bonnet slopes away a bit, so forward parking needs some care and attention until you're used to it. The same is not true of the rear, so reverse parking is a safe option, particularly in multi-storey car parks. I've loved this car; It's an amazingly 'good drive', and has the speed to get you into trouble, but the handling to get you out of it. It always feels light and responsive, and is extremely comfortable to be in, at least in the front seats. The ride in the back is firmer, but that's the trade-off for the handling. It's not a fashion statement in any way, but is a very underrated car, and is great for long trips, where it really is possible to frive far too long without feeling uncomfortable. The only things it doesn't have are looks and kudos. A final consideration, is that, as the SE spec came with all the 'bits', you don't need to worry about whether or not something is included, if buying second-hand.
I bought a 1997 'P' registered Nissan Primera 2.0GX 5 door hatchback (newer shape but not the latest one) in December 2000. After almost 12 months of ownership I can honestly say it's the best family saloon I've had to date. Having owned a Bluebird in the past and having a good experience with that followed by a disastrous 3 years with an Escort 1.8 diesel I decided it was time to return to Nissan and I haven't been disappointed! First and foremost, the car looks bland. Even with the go-faster spoiler on the boot it's no eye-opener it has to be said. However, I didn't buy it for its eye-catching qualities. I bought it because I wanted a car that wouldn't let me down when I needed it and was zippy enough for my sometimes heavy right foot and practical enough to carry a wife and two kids in comfort and the Primera does this very well. Apart from the spacious interior the Primera has a cavernous boot for those big shopping trips! The car may not be much to look at but it's definitely a drivers car. It corners like it's on rails (easily out-manouvering equivalent Vectra's / Mondeo's etc), the engine is rock solid and pulls hard all the way up to the red line and the car has a very comfortable driving position. I did a non-stop drive at 85-95 mph average speeds from Glasgow to Leeds (naughty boy!) and despite adverse conditions on the way the car coped admirably with the extended punishment and returned an average of 39 MPG! Not bad for a 2 litre! Having said that, my short 6 mile trip to work (motorway - 70 mph on a cold engine) and then return journey aswell as a little general running around still gives a respectable 28 MPG. If I could curb my tendency to be heavy footed I could probably get another 5 or 6 MPG out of it. The GX version is the base model but still comes well equipped. Air-conditioning, remote central dead-locking with immobiliser and electric front windows are
standard fitments. The air-con is a boon in all weathers. Great for keeping cool in summer and superb for demisting the windscreen in rainy conditions when everyone else is getting the hankies out to clear the screen. With hindsight I would've liked a better equipped S/SE/GT version or some such variant with extra added goodies such as all four windows being electric and a sunroof but then I've always been a gadget man! :) As for reliability, the only thing that I've had to pay for (apart from usual servicing requirements every 9000 miles) was an exhaust front-pipe. The original part started blowing and I was shown a split in the front flexi-pipe. The price of a replacement front-pipe was a heart stopper! After much phoning around the best price I could get was £220!!! Yes, that's what I had to pay in the end! And no, that price doesn't include a catalytic converter or something, that was the bog-standard downpipe. GULP! It would seem that repairs can cost the earth but in my experience, it won't need them often. Apart from the front-pipe I've had no other problems after 15000 miles of hard driving. Conclusion: If you want a reliable car that does what's asked of it, returns a reasonable MPG and don't mind driving something that won't turn any heads then test drive one of these, you won't be disappointed! Addendum: I've now owned this car for approaching two years and it's as reliable as ever. I had an ABS sensor go and needed new rear disks which ended up costing a whopping £510! Having said that, I don't for one minute regret buying it. It's quick, comfy and reliable. I'll almost certainly buy another Nissan and if not, it'll definitely be another Japanese make - I'll never touch Ford or Vauxhall again.
I have had the Nissan Primera for 2 months now. I did not choose it through some research on the web, actually most of my research choices concentrated on Honda and Toyota models. Nevertheless, I am happy with the Nissan. I have the “N” reg (i.e. 1996 model) Primera 2.0 SLX Hatchback, automatic. The car comes equipped with some fine standard accessories: 1 – Alloy wheels 2 – All power windows 3 – Remote Central locking 4 – Front fog lights 5 – Six speaker stereo (two on the front doors, two at the rear and 2 tweeters at the front) 6 – Electric sunroof 7 – Adjustable automatic transmission. 8 – ABS 9 – Driver’s airbag My favourite feature will have to be number 7 from the list above, the adjustable automatic transmission. A little button next to the transmission lets you select the mode of operation. There are 3 modes: 1 – Normal: This is the standard automatic transmission behaviour you get with all automatic cars. The transmission is configured to give you the most fuel economic ride. Which means you do not get as much power and the car is not as quick on the acceleration. 2 – Snow: In this setting the transmission never gets into first gear. You are always started from the second gear hence avoiding loosing control of the vehicle. 3 – Sports: This is where you feel the difference. The car starts performing like a sports car. It is very quick in the acceleration and gear changes are adjusted to give you the best performance (hence compromising on fuel efficiency). I found this setting very useful when driving in hilly areas where quick gear changes are necessary. The car’s engine itself is powerful enough. The 2.0 litre 16 valve engine is good enough for my needs. I must point out that I do not do any towing, hence I am unable to comment on that. The interior of the
car is pleasant. The dashboard is simple and easy to read. There are three interrior lights. Two are at the front, one for the front passenger and one for the driver. The other light is in the middle of the cabin. The seats are comfortable enough for long journeys. I went on a holiday recently and drove it for about 6 hours and was not uncomfortable at all. The back can fit 3 adults easily and comfortably. The car is equipped with NATS (Nissan Anti Theft System) which means that you cannot start the car without it’s original key. Even hot wiring won’t work because the engine computer checks for a code in the key and won’t allow the engine to start until it gets that code. The boot space is adequate for your family needs. There is enough space to put the shopping, or if you are going on holiday it should fit a couple of suitcases with ease (although I have never measured it completely). What I don’t like about the car is interior noise. There seems to be a lot of tyre noise that gets through to the inside. Wind noise is also a little loud. You don’t hear the engine that much unless you really step on the accelerator. The car is also equipped with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). I am sure everyone knows what that is by now. It is a shame there is only one airbag. I think it would have been good to also have an airbag for the passenger. On average the car does 26 mpg (or 9km/litre). Which is not very efficient, however it is a 2-litre engine and I do drive it a bit harsh. It might also be that the engine in my car needs proper tuning, in any case I do not classify the car as fuel efficient. Overall though, I do like the car and I enjoy driving it.
I got my Primera GT 5-door in April 1998 as a company car. Then, when I left, I bought it for £11000 at one year old – not a bad deal I think you’ll agree since it cost about £18500 the year before. I had always presupposed that the Primera would be a good car, and was not disappointed – fortunate for me as I didn’t test-drive it! So what made me choose it? 1.It was on our firm’s shopping list and was about 35p below my maximum spending power, before having to make a contribution myself! Me? Tight or what? 2.Reputation for solid construction 3.Specification at the GT level had plenty of boy’s toys. 150 bhp engine, A/C, half-leather seats and other trim, ABS, 6-CD player, electric sunroof, fuel computer, two-tone leather steering wheel, sports body pack, spoiler etc. The ordinary Primera’s styling was a bit ordinary to say the least, but the GT’s add-ons lifted it out of the mediocre to look the part. 4. Also, you could at least pretend that it bore some resemblance to the current racing saloon car champion at that time, whilst making brrrm brrrm noises! So, did I like driving it? Yes, definitely. The Primera’s already good reputation for handling was further improved by wider alloy wheels, lowered suspension and enhanced ABS. To use that much over-used phrase, it cornered like it was on rails, having something close to “1G” adhesion on corners before sliding. This was my first sizeable car with power steering, and at first it took a bit of nerve to push it hard, since I wasn’t used to the reduced “feel” when cornering. After a while it became second nature, like driving a Mini on steroids. For all it’s 140-odd mph top speed, it was a practical car, with good fuel consumption figures – particularly impressive for a 2-litre 150bhp engine. Thanks to the added spur to efficiency given by the fuel compu
ter, I managed to nurse about 55 mpg out of it on a drive from West London to Southampton, slipstreaming removal vans as I went! In case it was the computer telling “porkies”, I also ran a full-to-full check, which produced similarly impressive results. The seats won praise from all who sat in them, including people with back problems. Boot space was good but limited in height in common with most “5-doors” Why haven’t I got it now? Well, I would, but some prat towing a caravan (bloody shed-draggers!) rammed into the back of me on the M6 whilst I was stationary in a traffic jam. The damage was too extensive, and my neck has only just recovered. I miss my lovely silver Primera GT – I always sigh longingly when I see another one. The only thing that put me off buying another with the insurance money was the thought that a stranger with a lead foot might have been the previous owner. I knew where mine had been! My only gripe related to Nissan dealer prices for servicing which, in my case came at 9000 miles AND one year, since the anniversary of both tended to occur at the same time. If I recall, they had an A and a B service – one being under £300 and the other being over £300 – a bit steep I thought. Other than that , the lads from Sunderland done well! I’m not sure if it has an equivalent in the newer body shape. There is a sport model, but all the 2-litre cars seem to have the standard 130-odd bhp engine irrespective of trim level.
I thought about buying a Primera when I last needed to replace my car. They have good handling and ride, and are fairly robust. The 2 litre engine is pretty powerful, whilst the 1.6 is merely OK. It struggles a little if you like to drive around in 5th. They are made in the UK and are also very well equipped - the GX model has ABS and air conditioning. Things to look out for with a Primera are 1. the rear electric windows. If these aren't working, then its about £200 each to replace the motors 2. the alternator can be a bit weak. A good test for this is to start the car, then turn on the lights, fan, heated rear window and anything else you can find. If the lights dim under a big load, then it might well be a problem. 3. the multilink suspension gives excellent handling and ride, but there are a lot of bushes to replace after a high milage. Check for bumps and clonks as you drive around. For £4-5000, you can get a clean 1997 1.6 GX 5 door Primera, which should have a lot more life left in it. I think thats a bit of a bargain. Whilst I was shopping around, I drove some Primeras with much higher milages, which still seemed pretty tight. My wife decided she wanted a smaller car and so we didn't go for a Primera in the end. Its a shame as the only cars with decent handling and ride, ABS and air conditioning in the Golf/Astra/Focus class were new enough for second hand prices to be silly money. The MkIII Golf, MkIII Astra and Escort are significantly worse than the later models. In the end I imported a Focus for the same money that people were asking for an 18 month old second hand one.
After a disastrous flirtation with the Nissan Almera (see my opinon on Almera's for this!) we moved onto a Nissan Primera. At last we had made a good move!! Size wise it was a vast improvement. Petrol consumption much better, durability - great!! Lastibility for us? Well we still have our's nearly three year's down the line!! A record for us!! Our main problem with the Almera was the incredible petrol consumption!! So our first week's driving the Primera were spent nervously watching the petrol gauge!! This car certainly does far more miles to the gallon (phew!!) a much more economical car I have to say! As for oumph, well I can now hold my head up high and overtake on hill's!! yipee!! I have still found that the gear box can be a pain, this does seem to be a Nissan trait, problem's mainly with 1st and reverse. This is a mnior problem though and once you are used to handling your car, you know how to drive around such quirks!! Having moved up a size we expected this car to have a bigger boot etc, but wow what a difference. In the Almera you had a minimal amount of baggage space, in the Primera we can fit two dog's, luggage, baby equipment and still sit comfortably on a four hundred mile trip!! Definatly a family car. Much as some people have commented that the Primera does not look very stylish, I personaly think it has a class of it's own and I am quite fond of mine! I most certainly am not ashamed to be seen driving it!! A definate go for it all round!
Britain is supposed to be a nation of estate car buyers, but we're nothing in comparison to Italy where apparently 57% of all Mondeo size cars are estates. The Italian preference is apparently fed by men still living at home with mamma - but Nissan are not aiming the Primera estate at the 'bouncing suspension in country layby' brigade. The intention was to make an estate that didn't compromise the Primera's ride and handling, while still offering a larger cargo area, so nearly all the change is behind the rear wheels where overhang is extended by 85mm. The multi-link front suspension and multi-link beam rear setup are tweaked, with uprated rear axle, springs and dampers giving a similar ride to the saloon. The engine options stay the same, with 1.6 or 2 litre petrol engines and 2 litre turbodiesel. ABS, is standard across the range, is joined by EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) which apportions braking to the wheels, taking into account the car's loading. The final neat touch is the boot floor, which is a flat carpet for shoving in loads. But you can turn the centre section over and it becomes a washable deep plastic bay - and what will those Italians use that for?
Nissan I can remember my Dad’s K Reg Nissan Primera it was a 16LX hatchback. It was a really nice family car but also was good to take to work. It was very economical being a 1.6 litre engine and you could do plenty of miles to the gallon. It was spacious inside and was suitable for kids in the back. It had a big boot for the shopping. Insurance was cheap and running it was affordable. It wasn’t a good looker, when we bought ours it hadn’t done that many miles so it was excellent condition. I think it was a Japanese car and therefore the parts were fairly cheap in comparison to other cars. We bought it for £4,000 which was a good price about five years or go. However, this year when it came to selling it we sold it for a mere £1500 what a bargain. It had done 96,000 miles but still was in good conditions, the odd minor scratch, but no rust. So my advice is sell after a year otherwise you lose out. Nissans generally don’t hold their value, so if you by one expect a drop (according to the dealer). I think the Nissan Primera are excellent family cars and good for work. A good dashboard inside and the reliability you expect from Nissan cars. Worth buying the new models which have come out, you certainly get you’re tuppence worth I know we did. I can’t remember it going wrong that often either as long as you have it serviced regularly it should be ok. My marks for the Nissan Primera: LOOKS 6/10 AFFORDIBITLY 8/10 INSURANCE 9/10 OVERALL 8/10 People most suited to the Nissan Primera would be in 30-50 category, apologies to younger people who have one.
Having had a primera since 1996 which I was very pleased with, I decided earleir this year to buy the new model recently introduced. The prices for cars at the showroom were discounted as Nissan's lack image and are notorious for their massive relative depreceation. I previously owneda 1.6 lx but decided to go for the 2.0l SE+ which comes with a 6 Cd changer, better headlights , leather trim , electrics all round , climate control, ABS , alloys etc etc. The car available for a reasonably good discount of £3000 on list was a Silver metallic one. The paint on delivery was noted to be very marked and it looked as though some foreign particles had got embedded into the lacquer. A quick visit to a body shop and the problem was cleared.The dealer gave me a free service plan for the inconvenience. Driving the old car was great fun, although only a 1.6l , it was quite agile as long as I was the only occupant. This new two litre version is as much fun ( as fun as these saloons can be) but the seats are definately not as comfortable. Long journeys in the old primera were a breeze but my wife and I both find that the new version is not as comfortabel for longer journeys, the lower back support is poorer and leads to fatigue quite quickly. The car also sounds asthmatic when pushed.Acceleration isn't as slick nor as capable as you'd expect from a 2l engine. Gears are smooth however. The climate control is quite effective but unlike in some cars, when the air conditioing and demisting are selected together, the ambient temperature quickly falls even if the temperature has been selected as higher. Living with the car is easy, no one bats an eyelid when you park a new primera within 2 feet of them. Added to this is an impressive alarm system with anti hijack locks ( ie , the passenger doors are kept locked unless you activate the key fob twice). So unlikley that the car will go awry without your say so.So far the fuel economy has been good with an average of around 30mp
g despite being pushed hard on motorways. The interior finish is not tacky nor plasticky as Nissans used to be. Soft feel plastics and firm trim abound. The fake wood is ok within the leather environment. safety is high, air bags everywhere , including side impact bags. The boot space is good enough for a family of four. Overall an excellent car with hopefully the same reliability of its predecessor.
It may not be a head turner or a people stopper but the NISSAN PRIMERA is certainly a drivers car. On the outside it looks like your usual 4/5 door family saloon or hatchback and inside, the passenger area is well laid out with all the usual pockets and cubby holes . The driving position is superb with all the gauges viewable and a majority of the controls are accessed from the steering coloum. The seat are comfortable and fully adjustable in all directions. Air conditioning, electric windows etc are all standard but if the air con is switched on the power loss from the engine is quite noticable as is the reduction in m.p.g. The engine is responsive, the all round ABS and suspension setup makes this car an absolute dream to drive it sticks to the road, what ever you try and do to it. Iam now on my fourth PRIMERA and quite honestly there is not another car in this price range I think that can touch it for driver appeal.
Looks wise, the Primera is nothing major. Don't get me wrong though, the new range looks undeniably more nifty than the previous series, but something is still not quite right. This would all be very important to you if you were that way inclined. What is more important to me, is the driver appeal, and this is where the car excels! Finally beginning to shake of that mini-cab image, the Primera benefits from independent suspension, giving it a limpet like feel on the road that no other comparatively priced car can match. It feels like a go-kart going round roundabouts, with very responsive steering. I think it could be this factor that gives them the edge in the BTCC racing. Primeras have won nearly every race for the last few years (although perhaps I am being a little biased!). Engine wise, the car is very reliable with typical Japanese technology underneath. I have read though that rear suspension could be something to look out for later in its life. Generally though, a great driving car, but don't be surprised to see people flagging you down for a lift on the odd occasion!
