Advantages: Reliability, handling on wintery roads, decent economy
Disadvantages: lack of cubby holes, fiddly rear seats
My 2003 Nissan Xtrail diesel is the sport version with the Nissan 2.2 di engine. I have found it to be extremely reliable needing only brake pads and tyres in the last two years. The six speed gear box is really usefull when driving at motorway speeds as it allows the car to averaged 37 mpg. This is very respectable for a big 4x4 and coupled with its ability in snowy weather makes it a very useful all rounder. Its reassuring to be able to drive such a big safe vehicle given the weather in the last few years and the state of some of the roads near me! The rear seating space is excellent and I can easily seat three adults in the back in relative comfort. As a 6 footer I also appreciate the excellent head height in the front and in fact the visibility all round is good as the pillars don`t get in the way too much.
The only minor niggles I have with it is that there are not quite enough cubbie holes in the front and that dropping the back seats down to increase the size of the boot is a bit of a faff for one person. I find the lever you need to pull to unlock and lower the back seats is really stiff and I often need a hand doing this.
Overall the nissan xtrail ballances decent economy with excellent off road / winter weather driving ability and a reasurring amount of safety kit. The reliabilty has been very good compared to my last french car. Say no more!
Summary: excellent dependable year round allrounder
