Advantages: Caterham eat your heart out

Disadvantages: Lack of speed, cramped rear

205 GTi it's not, but the 106 XS is sure to become a classic. It has quite a torquey 1360cc SPFi engine and 5 spoke alloys shod in 165/60 baby Pirelli P2000s which make it look as cute as a terrier!

Unfortunately, this car is not about outright speed and you have to buy the XSi model for that (with 33% more power), but the handling is sharp with very little body roll and superb grip.

I do tend to chuck mine around corners rather too much and get through a set of tyres a year on only 8000 miles! At 47 quid a throw that's not really very cheap ... but boy is it fun!

OK, so am I being a bit over enthusiastic about this little machine? Probably, but only a bit! It's only insurance group 7 and will get you from 0-60 in only 13 seconds (manufacturer estimate) but it will top a ton-ten and feels solid even 7 years later.

Even now, the car returns over 40 miles to the gallon and costs me less than 1500 quid a year to run (all in!).

I may take the plunge and buy a Caterham soon, but as Top Gear magazine said about the 106 GTi few years back "the most fun this side of a Caterham Super 7". This car is all about ride and handling - and in those departments it excels.

PANTS! After 70,000 miles of abuse and 7 years, I've blown a cylinder head gasket!
I'll let you know how it works out when I take it in for repairs this week! So long!

Hurrah! Just saved myself a few hundred quid on repair bills. Took the machine down to my local garage who said the head gasket was OK and that the car needed servicing. So much for listening to my mates. Still, what do they know anyhow. So my faith in the car is restored! PS I paid 150 nicker for a full service and timing belt change which were long overdue so its running smoothly at the moment and making some great noises!
