Advantages: Handling, cheap (insurance, parts, mpg), quite nippy

Disadvantages: Build quality, not a GTi, limited colours

The Peugeot 205 Rallye was a late model special edition of the 205. Unlike the later 106 & 306 Rallye's, it is based not on the GTi but on the smaller engined XS model. What it does share with the other Rallye's is a limited choice of colour scheme (either white or yellow), some loud contrasting stripes & 'Rallye' decals, and a stripped out interior with sports seats and steering wheel.

Infact the interior is one of the main problems with the Rallye as with all 205s. It's made of cheap plastics, it feels flimsy and everything rattles and squeaks when you drive along. Furthermore, the fabric of the seats on my 79,000 mile car has started to wear through already. Having said this mechanically they are reliable cars, and are cheap to fix when they go wrong.

All this is immaterial as soon as you start driving - by far the best bit about the Rallye. With a 1.4 engine in a fairly lightweight body the 205 really is quite nippy, although you really have to rev it to get the full potential out of the engine. The clutch, steering and gearchange are all light and precise, and the brakes are good. The suspension is soft though, and they do roll a bit through corners.
