Advantages: Good Value, Sporty, Easy on Insurance/Tax

Disadvantages: High fuel consumption

I guess I am slightly in the wrong category here as I own a 1999 Peugeot 206 XS. In 2001, Peugeot upgraded this model to XSi. I will explain the differences later.
I previously owned a 1.1 litre 206 LX, and the car left me with such a good impression that I went and bought another !

Intro :
The 3 door XS variant fits in between the GLX and GTI models. As with all 206's it comes very well specced and the target market is for people looking for a good value, easy to insure sporty 206.

Specification :
As standard you get Electric windows, Remote central locking, Remote control radio/cassette player. ABS, and Front fog lamps.
The Radio/Cassette player is CD compatible - so for a pricey IR£ 450 you can purchase a 6 cd changer for the boot.
The interior of the car is pretty much the same as the lower models - LX/GLX. There is plenty of room in both the front and back seats and will carry 4 adults comfortably.
The centre console is upgraded to include the ourside temperature and Radio/CD display and is surrounded by an alluminium like finish.

Performance :

The car has a 1.6 8 valve multi-point injection engine producing 90 bhp. It's nippy enough to warrant its sporty class, but certainly lacks the uuumph of its Gti sibling. The 0-60 sprint takes about 11 seconds and it reaches a top speed of 110 mph.
One thing which Peugeot can be proud of on all the 206 models is the superb handling of the car. The XS's suspension system will fill you with confidence when cornering at speed. The car remains perfectly composed driving at motorway speeds and above.

Reliability :

I bought the car about 3 months ago and have yet no problems to report. I also had 2 years problem free driving my 1.1 LX so I would have to say the car is very reliable.

Value for Money :

I bought this car second-hand. It cost IR£9,500. This I feel was a good deal. The retail price for a new XS ( in 200
0 ) was IR£12,495.
Insurance costs and Road Tax are kept low as it is only a 1.6 - same as most family cars on the road.
Petrol consumption is high, when the car is driven hard. At normal speeds/revs the mileage/gallon is about average at 35 mpg.

My Own Car :

My car is Diablo Red in colour. I've fitted the standard rear spoiler and bought a set of GTI alloy wheels + low profile Bridgestone tyres. I was lucky to find a second hand 6 cd changer which cost me IR£150.
So the total cost to me was IR£10,500.

The XSi :

The differences between the XS and XSi are as follows.
1) 1.6 16v engine producing 110bhp
2) Clear Lens headlamps and front fog lamps

There may be more minor differences but these I think are the main two.

Summary :
If you ( like me ) face very high insurance premiums, but would like a car that has a nice sporty look and feel, then this is a good option to go for.

Great op, don't know how I missed it earlier. I have driven one of these for about a week, only problem being I couldn't get enough leg room.

I thoroughly agree that this is a fantastic car. It's quick enough to do what you want. As a previous owner of the 206 GTi (current owner of 206 CC), I think that the XS would have suited me just as well as the GTi did. Both look just as good as each other and performance on the XS is very adequate.
