I've recently bought a 306 GTI 6 having previously owned a 106 Rallye. I wasn't dead set on owning a 306 GTI, infact I tried most of the obvious competition out - Renault Clio 172 Sport, Honda Integra Type R, 206 GTI, Puma 1.7 etc. When it came to the crunch, the 306 fitted the bill the best. I'm not the only one to think this, check out the definitive GTI review in EVO magazine, this heads 15 GTIs together, the winner being the 306 GTI. It is a great car, the key features being: Excellent chassis, hence brilliant handling. 6 Speed gear box and 167 bhp. Leather suede interior. Air Con. CD player. Alloys etc etc etc. It's a very well specked car, and a very complete package. If you have less money to spend, try and track down a 306 Rallye. It is basically the same car, but has no electric windows, air con, side air bags or cd. So its still a great car just a little less refined. One of the other great advantages of the 306 GTI is that they are freely available with prices starting from under 9k. However, I'd recomend trying to getter one on a R plate or later, as these have CD as standard and Alcantara/Leather, whereas the earlier models have HORRIBLE pastel tone cloth. A few other things to consider: The 306 GTI is quite thirsty, maybe 30mpg at best. Tyres are quite expensive, and can wear fast if you spend your time sideways on roundabouts. Insurance is group 16, I'm 24, 2 years claims cost 700 quid.
