Advantages: Good Handling
Disadvantages: Reliability, Fuel Economy, Costs, Ride
Relishing the chance to drive one of the most hyped cars in recent years I jumped into my friends 306 gti-16 First impressions left me disapointed - the interior is of low quality (A friends Skoda has a better quality interior) and although well equiped feels extremely flimsy. The controls lack the quality feel I have come to expect from german cars and there is the definate opinion that the cabin will start to fall to pieces once the car becomes a few years old. The enqine although reasonably gutsy when revved lacks low down torque and never feels like it has the full measure of its alleged power (167bhp). The gears are Ok - the shift quality is not the sweetest around - but adequate. Handling I must say is excellent - as long as the road surface is good - you cannot fault the grip and lack of roll - the 306 gives you confidence to push on through the twisty bits. The Ride is too hard for day to day motoring - I suspect Peugeot have traded in handling for ride comfort here - which although OK at first becomes annoying on long drives. Comfort levels are poor - the ride is hard and noise levels are way too high. Fuel economy is extremely poor some 10 mpg worse than a BMW 525 on average - this cannot be excused as the BMW is a much larger car and has 30 BHP more. Reliability of (my friends car) has been a disaster: A window fell out ! Fuel Injection Computer failed £2000+ Catalytic converter failed £800 Seat broke Door Seal Failed Clutch Failed Several small paint and trim problems Water Pump failed. Eventually the car was returned to the lease company early. Servicing is also very expensive when compared to other equivalent manafacturers. This car will seem good if you are used to average makes Vauxhall/Ford/Rover but in reality it fails to deliver. Save Your Money - buy German !

- 23/03/03 I have only just bought one of these - a used one with 37 k on clock - and thought your review was a miserable one.
You must be a past master because this car is faster than anything I have driven before. Certainly it is nothing like a "Skoda", like you claim.
I admit the gears are a challenge.
But the sound system alone is worth mentioning. The classic sporty ride helps me to appreciate CDs - like Bowie's "Let's Dance" - like never before. This vehicle certainly dances round bends.
Please... It is such a fine vehicle and in no way does it lack revs.
My other immediate thoughts are:
This car is great
It is fast, furiously fast. No one can get away from me. The engine sound is sporty and just what I want.
It?s a real adrenalin buster. Goes around bends in a superb way. Any excuse and I am out it at the moment. Anyone who likes a bit of fun should own one - even nearly new one.
