Peugeot 307 SW
Advantages: Price, Standard Equipment, Economy, Space
Disadvantages: Cheap Interior, Poor CD Player,
I had this car as a hire car in June and covered close to 2000miles in that week alone so am quite well placed to write a review on it.
Being a foreign car it was spec'd differently to the UK but had Automatic Climate Control, Full Electrics, Panoramic Glass Roof, front foglights and trip computer. I do know a bit about these cars in the UK and know most of them do come with these anyway. We chose the car to ferry myself, three passengers and all our luggage for a 2 week holiday driving around france and spain and we couldn't have had a more practical car for what we wanted.
Firstly the space, how do they get so much space from a small family estate. The do market it as a mini mpv but in reality it's a 7 seater estate car but the space inside is immense! It was comfortable inside and had room for 4 suitcases, 4 rucksacks and a wheelchair in the boot alone! Everyone was impressed with this! The glass roof also helped make it feel even more airy that it actually was. There were masses of cubby holes to put things in, cup holders in the fold down table in the back and a lockable air conditioned glovebox which was good when we were camping in spain for our valuables.
Although spacious the car was a little dated inside. You can tell it was in need of the replacement which has just come out, the 308 SW. However it is hard wearing and functional and not a disgrace by any means. If you were buying one second hand it would not put you off at all providing you expect a few rattles and squeeks after a few miles.
The engine was lovely to use. It was smooth and powerful and never struggled even with our full car. It was the 110bhp Diesel engine and the torque pulled is and all our stuff with ease. It was also pretty economical giving us 45mpg and had a range of over 600 miles per tank. I'm sure with a normal lesser load and less agressive driving it would easily get us over 50mpg.
The handling was adequate though typical peugeot, smooth and quiet but not much fun around the bends. It's not meant to be a sporty car and it's not but is safe and holds the road quite well even with a heavy load.
After a fortnight with this car I can say it is an extremely practical family car that will be cheap to run and cheap to buy as well with some very reasonable new and used prices. If you've got 2 or 3 children and need something to take you and your luggage on days out and holidays very little will do it better for the same money with the same standard equipment. Well worth a look if that's what you need!
Summary: If you need cheap and functional nothing does it better
