Advantages: Looks attractive and the seats are very comfortable. Very spacious inside.

Disadvantages: Electrical and mechanical problems ruin the package

I've had my 307 since October 2001. It's almost coming up to 70,000 miles and after four years, I've realised this car isn't that good.

The car is attractive. Visibility is terrific all round especially with the windscreen making it feel like a bigger car. Interior space is generous. The seats come from the 607 so they are really comfortable.

The radio and CD player are first class. Not boombox standard but you get a decent volume without rattling.

The brakes on the car are terrific. They have managed to get me out of some precarious situations. The 1.6 engine has some punch so overtaking isn't much of a problem.

The car does on average 430 miles to the tank although I suspect you can get 450 but by then you're running on fumes.

However, not all is good...

The car has been recalled...six times! Power steering issues and ECM issues.

The lock on the hatch boot door failed after one week. As a result, I couldn't lock the car for a few days. The dealership resolved the problem on the day I took it in.

The ride is quite harsh. Go over a few gentle bumps and the suspension feeds it back to you. Passengers wince in pain as a result. Going around corners is tricky as it feels unstable.

Fitting new bulbs in the rear cluster is easy but try fitting new bulbs at the front - it's a nightmare. Whoever designed the arrangement for the fitting ought to be fired.

The electrics are temperamental. On numerous occasions, the radio can't make it's mind up in displaying information on the dashboard display. On two occasions, the electrics went off without warning. Once on a motorway doing 70 at night and 40 in rainy conditions. These instances lasted for 10 seconds. Without calling me a liar, the dealership said they couldn't find anything. Then a few days later, a recall notice came through to fix the electrics!

The radiator leaked within the warranty period.

And here's the best bit- the indicator had to be replaced...7 times under warranty! Why - because it never locked in place and you always ended up flashing other drivers if you attempted to indicate left. Weird but true.

So, concluding my review, my 307 is now practically worthless thanks to the new 307 which recently came out. Am I tempted to get one? No. Peugeot have priced them against VW Golfs and I know which one I'd go for…

Summary: A great package let down by sloppy electrics

I've been driving my wifes 307 1.6S from early 2004 for a while now, and want to comment on the similarities and differences. I have been able to achive 499 miles to a tank of petrol, which is good, rather than excellent as petrol isn't cheap. Still with a strong engine and a large car mpg is perhaps the best that can be done in real world driving. The car handles well on its 15" alloys and on motorways urges you to press on with instant acceleration in 5th. I guess a longer top gear would make it an all-round vehicle, as for now I think it's an A-road cruiser.

The stereo is mediocre, lacking in bass compared to my previous Punto.

Ours has had the ABS done under warranty, just after it had been in to fix a problem when the speedo, rev and display all read nothing. My local dealer is good though, and we took the opportunity to get the brake fluid changed, improving the already good brakes.

I like the car, but not enough to get another Peugeot. And after a courtesy Polo I had (from a bodyshop) I wouldn't touch an overpriced VW.

Thanks for your comments everyone. The car still gets me from A to B - by a sheer miracle I think!

Ah yes, the old 'French car reliability' bugbear - never seems to go away, does it?
