Advantages: Fun, Sexy, Safe, Practicle
Disadvantages: Not that I can find
Well in the first half of June the new 307 will be launched as a complete replacement for the ageing 306, and it is a far superior car. Being one of the very few people to have had the chance of actually being able to see the car in the flesh, and also have the chance to drive it. But how does it compare with the rest of the market? Well in price talk it is very well priced as the new 307 starts from just under £11,000 for the entry level 'Style' model to just over £16,000 for the sporty new XSi and DTurbo models. The range will be in true Peugeot fashion with Style, LX, GLX, Rapier, XSi and DTurbo specifications. The difference being is that they will all include some very important features as standard like ABS (Anti-lock breaks) with EBFD (Electronic Break Force Distribution) which will basically mean that you will greatly reduce the skid factor in breaking and with EBFD maintain control of the breaking without swerving. Also Front, Passenger, Side and curtain airbags will be standard. So it is set to be the safest car in its class. In terms of engines there will be a few new entries, and some old favourites made new for the newest of the Peugeot range. In respect to petrol there will be 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 engines. But with diesel there will be some groundbreaking new technology, like the new 110bhp HDi engine with our Particulate filter that will cut emissions to nearly nothing!! Also the HDi 90bhp engine will remain, but also soon to be released will be a new 1.4 HDi to replace the old 1.9 non-turbo engine. The interior will be very different from other Peugeot cars, as they have decided that bold clean lines are the way of things, and so the interior looks very much like a VW. With clean well made plastics and firm responsive switches that really ooze quality. Peugeot are definitely on a mission to prove that they can build cars as good as - if not better than the Germans. The drive of t
he new 307 is nothing short of super. They really have focused on trying to make this the best riding car in its class, and again they have won. The chassis is so responsive, and the level of grip is second to none. The ride is smooth, yet not wollowly on the Style, LX and GLX. Yet on the Rapier, XSi and DTurbo that have firmed it up had it really is like driving the 306 GTI-6 and Rallye all over again - which if you didn't know are commonly known to be the best hot-hatches ever made (Its a Peugeot thing - they build cars for fun) So all in all I recommend you get down to our local dealer and talk to them about it. I know that they will not have any for you to see and try. But they have information pouring out of them and are very keen to share it with you - hey you can even order one now and expect it June/July time!! I did, I've got on the way a new 307 XSi in Aegean Blue. J

- 04/02/03 Just leased a 307Xsi, after having a Focus 1.8 Zetec.
650 miles on, no problems withthe 307. Gear change isn't as crisp as the Ford, but the rise is more solid. The fat Pirellis grip the road like the car was glued to it. Performance is a little flat 40-50, petrol mileage is very good for engine size (28.5 average over 350 miles).
Interior is excellent bar the dash which has too much black bobble plastic.
All in all an improvement over the Focus in terms of comfort and performance (should 200cc make that much difference?).
In summary, the nice solid clunk of the Peugeot's door makes a refereshing change to the tin can sounding Ford. Glad I moved up (apologies tot eh wife who inherited the Focus after 10 year with a 626 ..... another story)

- 14/08/01 We had a 106 until recently (K reg). We've never had any trouble with it. Great little car, if a little basic. So not everyone thinks Peugeots are cr*p... |

- 14/08/01 We had a look at the new 307 recently, and were distinctly underwhelmed with it. The interior is dull and uninspiring. The styling is awful. What is it with these pig-ugly MPV styled cars? The 306 looked so much better. Oh well, the whims of fashion...
I can't comment on the 307's drive. I'm sure that overall the 307 is an improvement on the 306, but "BEST IN CLASS"? I don't think so. |
