Advantages: Stunningly good looking, Strong engines
Disadvantages: Electrics , Build quality, Attitude of dealers / Peugeot
I have owned two Peugeot 406 coupes - both V6 models. The first was a used approved vehicle (18 months old with 12000 miles) the second was brand new. I have no problem with the way they look... let's face it, they are very handsome vehicles indeed. If you want people to take a second glance as you drive through the urban mass, over populated with BMW 3 series and Audi TTs, you had better choose a 406 coupe. Collecting admiring glances was never a problem. I have no problem with the engines... my first 406 had the old type V6 delivering 193BHP, the second had the revised unit with 210BHP. Both were smooth and responsive, and with a 20000 mile service interval, not too expensive to maintain. Despite manufacturers data suggesting that the new engine was more fuel efficient I found the reverse to be the case - although there wasn't really much in it, the 210 engine demanded more frequent visits to the petrol station. I got rid of the first 406 because the secondary mechanical and electric systems started to cause problems - the cruise control stopped working, the climate control failed, the variable power steering malfunctioned - all still covered by warranty, but worrying enough to want to change the car before the 3 years were up - I shudder to think want to repairs would have cost me to pay for out of my own pocket. I loved the look and feel of the car so much that I decided to buy a brand new one... top of the range, no expense spared. The problems started early on. Again they were secondary and electrically issues - the engine was fine. I ended up taking the car back 10 times in 9 months. Highlights included electric seats that operated themselves, an alarm system capable of lowering the windows whilst you were away from the vehicle, and a CD multichanger reincarnated from Skippy the bush kangaroo. Eventually, with county court papers pending, the dealership finally agreed to buy the car back from me at the
top list price for it's age (a fair resolution I felt). Peugeot UK had no interest in helping whatsoever, I got a strong sense of - thanks for spending £27,000 on one of our cars, we have cashed your cheque, now p**s off because we don't give a t**s about you. I was so disappointed that, in my experience (I fully accept that other people may truly love their 406 coupes - good for them!) the beautiful lines and strong engines of the 406 coupe were matched with wholly inadequate build quality in terms of electrics and secondary systems. They don't make 406 coupes any more so it is an entirely second hand market... great if you can get a good one - you'll get a lot of car for your money. But if you get either of mine (both Silver) I hope you are both patient and wealthy! Perhaps I was just unlucky.... twice!
