Advantages: Looks, specifications (inside & out) and power.

Disadvantages: None really (No arm rest?!)

Having previously owned a Peugeot 405 SRi for the last three and a half years, the time was right to upgrade to the super stylish 406 GLX.

I went ot my local Peugeot dealer to talk money and cars and after some discussion, I reserved my V registration, platinum silver 406 GLX.

As this was a used car, I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that the mileage was only 13,000 which is good for the age of the car (Oct. '99) and the price was even better at just £9995. Once you get the first years depreciation out of the way, you really can pick up some very good deals - even from main dealers!

First impressions of the interior are....WOW! Incredibly comfortable, lots of room and every piece of technology to make your journey even more enjoyable.

4 speakers connected to the Clarion CD player make for the in-car entertainment along with the perfectly tuned, stereo radio. An extra 'stalk' on the right of the steering wheel gives you extra control of the stereo in as much as you can alter the volume, the radio station and the CD tracks rather than having to take your eyes off the road and fiddle with the stereo. A good safety plus point! The digital climate control is very easy to use with the added bonus of air-conditioning and the 'auto' button which senses the conditions inside the car and adapts itself to them. The drivers seat is fully adjustable i.e it can be adjusted to go forwards, backwards, up, down, reclined or upright. Drivers airbag, passenger airbag also which can be disabled if you are carrying a rear facing child carrier - another good feature. ABS as standard. Electric windows, front and rear with a child lock on the rear. A service indicator which comes on whenever you start the engine telling in how many miles your next service is. An electronic oil level indicator....all these things aimed at making your life easier. Like they say, it's the small things that count. One thing that isn't there
which surprised me was the arm rest on the drivers left hand side. Although this is available to buy from Peugeot, it seems a bit odd that they omitted it in the first place to replace it with a drinks holder! I know which I'd rather have for those long drives.

And as for the exterior? Well, what can you say? The slick curves, the gorgeous alloy wheels, there isn't an awful lot to dislike about the 406 - whichever model you go for.

On the driving side, mmmmm, a bit too early to say really as I haven't taken it on a major run out yet, but I can only compare with my old 405 which isn't really fair as they were two totally different cars whose engines were tuned towards different driving states. The 405 SRi was perfect for fast pull aways and motorway driving, but hated the slow, rush hour traffic whereas the 406, although excellent for motorway driving, is aimed at a slightly more sedate and confident driver while still maintaining the power that you need when you need it, but is also great in traffic at slow speeds.

All in all, a great car that pretty much has it all!

Useful opinion that could have improved if you talked more on the driving/engine/power side of the car rather than concentrating more on the extras and the interior.
