now have experience of three Peugeot 406s , two have been saloons and now I have a 2.0litre Hdi estate. In total I have probably done around 100,000 miles in the 406 models. After two petrol models I now have a diesel with the 110 bhp common-rail diesel engine. The 406 has always been an attractive well-proportioned car and recent changes to the lights front and rear have given it a more aggressive posture. It is a comfortable car with seats neither too firm nor too soft and an adjustable steering column to help get the right driving position and importantly for the best view of the instruments. 406 HDi Saloon GTX 110
Having owned a variety of French diesel cars I can say that the 406 is the best. The HDi engine is marvel in terms of refinement and I frequently exceed 50mpg. The ride is almost limo like and the steering is precise and involving.
It is small wonder why the 406 is the taxi drivers car of choice. My last one did 180,000 miles and kept plodding on.
There are a few things to be aware of. If the low break fluid warning comes on it may be a fault with the handbrake sensor (under the carpet). Its costs crumpence to replace. I replaced the brakes before learning this! Also the bodywork is rather flimsy and new dents turn up as a result of pillocks opening thier car doors.
I considering adding a performance chip, is this something that is worth doing?

I've driven the 406 many times, in the old form and in the new form. I think out of all the family saloons on the market, this is one of the best. The looks are typically French. It has a character unique to itself. Driving this car is a dream. It is so comfortable and driveable at the same time. Handling is sublime and involving. It rides bumps with great ease, yet takes a corner with great agility. Having driven mostly the diesel versions, this is all I can really comment about. The original 1.9 turbo-charged diesel was a fine machine. The pulled well and gave enough grunt to pass other cars safely. With the car being about 40 stone ... Read the complete review
