Advantages: Huge interior with a quiet comfortable ride, Suprisingly economical to run, Looks nicer than a Volvo

I got a secondhand R reg LX 1.8 about 9 months ago. It has a high mileage (97000?!), but it still in good condition, it's ex-fleet so should be dog tired, but it does have a full service history so I'm not that worried about the cam-belt (yet).

Outside: I think it looks nice but then I'm biased. All the trims are still attached, and a scan under the chassis reveals a well preserved, rot free solid frame. The body work is still good too. No rust yet. What can I say? I prefer the shape to it's competitors?

Inside: Roomy. I mean big. I know it isn't longer than most cars from the outside, but inside it feels a few feet longer than the car in front of me. The AirCon works a treat, all the electrics are fine. The dash is clear and simple. The seat adjusts to where I want it. My wife can quite happily nod off in the passenger seat. Big and comfy. I would have liked an ashtray on the right hand side of the driver, but thats my problem. Oh and the bulb in the boot has blown.

It's fairly thrifty on the petrol, I reckon I'm getting about 10 or 11p per mile (March 2003), which isn't at all bad considering the size of the beast. Not the quickest off the block, but it accelerates enough to keep motorway driving easy. A very good crusier in fact, and suprisingly good on country roads, must be a very stiff chassis for an estate or something. Darn quiet inside! (Mind you I used to drive 2CV's :)

One of the big selling points was the safety factor. Full side impact bars (or so I'm told), airbags, and just a feeling of mass on all sides :) A bit like driving a Volvo, though more stylish.

Ok, so it's a family car. For some that's boring (go start a family :), for me it's an excellent family car. Comfy, huge and eats miles with a quiet purrr.
