Advantages: Very high level of equipment, beautiful road stance

Disadvantages: Automatic suspension to soft, Soggy ride

With the 607 range now being extended to include a 2.0 petrol and the 2.0 HDi (110bhp)diesel engine the price of the 607 range has fallen so to open it up much more. Now it is now a real contender for the Vauxhall Omega market.

The drive of the 607 is very smooth - this is more true of the v6 SE model which features a automatic suspension set-up, which constantly firm/softenes the ride depending on your driving style. But the other models are also nearly as smooth - but when you are on a standard 'A' road I think the V6 SE is just too 'wollowly', and I end up having to override the auto setting and set it to 'sport' mode to make the handeling more direct, as otherwise there is just too much body role for me.

The performance from the V6 and the 2.2 HDi are super, very smooth but rapid at the same time. Then marry that to the new Peugeot Tiptronic automatic gearbox make a lovely drive. The 2.2 petrol engine does lack the power that the other two engines give, but neverless it is still far from underpowered. I have yet to drive the 2.0 versions, so I cannot tell if they are just going to be too small for such a heavy car.

The equipment levels in the car is very high indeed, infact in SE guise the car literally has everything you could ever need and more! For instance the colour satallite Navigation system in the V6 SE and optional on the others also features ports in the glove box for you to plug in your Camcorder!! Also the car comes as standard with an inbuild GSM mobile phone, and you can plug you SIM card into it as well, which is an excellent idea. That matched witht he JBL sound system make for a very powerful sound system in the car capable of blasting out an Opera or a Telephone conference with amazing clarity.

But the question is would I buy one? Well if I was in the market for a car that big it would cirtainly get my fullest attention, and I would have it over a Vauxhall, Ford, Citroen, VW a
ny day. But does it match up to a BMW or Merc? Equipment - yes it beats them. Driving - ok its not like an Audi Quattro. But it is different from the rest of the pack - it stands out and says I dare to be different!!

BTW, this week Mr Dunn gave a first class rveiew of the Honda Accord type r, similar to that bought by Mrs Gee in January. His opinion reflected ours' exactly. Very little negative (boring dash... needs a 6th gear ...). But all the positves were again the same "... have to spend at least twice as much to get a better quality high performance car ..."

Just about to put yesterday's copy of The Scotsman into the paper bank heap when I noticed that their motoring correspondent, Jim Dunn, had tested a 607. I will quote :

"I cannot figure out why anyone would possibly want to buy one, unless of course they are an executive of the French Car maker ....the technology does not work ....in spite of having what is billed as a sophisticated electronic suspension system, the car bumps and thumps and rattles its way over rough road surfaces. It also rolls too much in corners ... handling and stragnge steering gives the drivers little confidenece .. not a car I would choose for brisk cross-country journeys ... costs a whopping .... Need I go on ?

I'ms sure it muyst be the same car, but that is just an independent opinion from someone who drives at least one different car each week as part of his job.

Sorry, but I know who I would prefer to believe ......
