Advantages: Space, View, Ease of driving

Disadvantages: Lack of power

I recently hired a people carrier from Avis to take my family on a trip to Thurso on the very northern tip of Scotland. Having three young kids it seemed like a good idea to get a car with adequate space and room for the journey. I didn't have any choice of model and as I have never driven a people carrier, I wouldn't have known what to pick anyway.

The car was an automatic with a metallic red paint finish. It performed really well and was extremely comfortable and easy to drive.

From a passenger perspective it was excellent. The kids loved the high seating position which afforded them an excellent view of the wonderful scenery that we passed on the way. A pit stop at a McDonalds drive thru was great, the extra space available ( we removed the middle seat of the middle row) allowed the kids to walk through the car to get their grub, there are loads of cupholders storage areas and the extra seat folded down to a table. Changing seats at stops even provided some entertainment as the kids wanted to have sat in every seat.

The fact it was an automatic helped with floor space as the control is on the dash which meant the passeneger footwell wasnt full with the usual tissues, sweets, drinks, rubbish bag as it could be stored easily between the front two seats.

From a drivers perspective the controls were great, easy to use, the visibility excellent, brakes excellent and handling very car like. However the only adverse comments I have are about the engine, as it seemed to struggle a bit with the inclines encountered and did not provide adequate acceleration to overtake quickly. I dont know if it is available with a larger engine size, or more powerful 2.0l, if it is I would advise choosing that option.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and has made me think about people carriers for my next car.
