Advantages: Slick, Brilliant ride and performance, good fuel consumption
Disadvantages: Costly, insurance
Behind the somewhat "unperforming" Proton lies a pure animal ready to be released in the Proton GTI. All thanks however go to Lotus for their top class engineering and handling. The Proton GTI though similar in shape to its Proton "Satria" cousin has extra parts which make the GTI a mean machine. 16inch alloy wheels, 1.8litre DOHC engine, rear spoiler, recaro racing seats with front, side and back skirtings beef up the plain looking Satria. Fuel consumption is excellent! And the metallic gear stick is slick (be thankful that this is not a tropical country because the gear stick can get pretty hot when left out in the sun!). Pedals are metallic with "GTI" inscribed on them. The dashboard and speedometer though more jazzed up then the Wira is still quite cheap and tacky however. Safety features are quite poor with only one air bag for the driver. However this is quite easily made up for by the quality of the ride! Impressive and shocking for a car from Proton! Not to mention a 0 - 60 of about 7.8 seconds. At a price of 13000 pounds (reduced from 15000) the Proton GTI is definitely worth considering if you are thinking of getting a GTI.

bradburyss - 23.08.02 I used to work for Proton and got to know the GTi quite well. The claimed 0-60 is very far fetched, you will be lucky to get it much under 9 secs I would have thought. I agree with the handling and ride, there isn't another GTi out there that drives like it. Comparing it to a 206GTi showed that up (although the GTi was much quicker and had a considerably better interior in it). There are a few quality problems though, the paint chips off the side skirts very easily and the sill plates catch the underside of the doors removing paint from them. Definitely something to check out. The gear knobs have a habit of working loose and as the car is a Satria with a body kit, there is the quality of the interior. It's not unknown from trim to break and even after a few thousand miles it can start to rattle and squeak. They are good cars but let down by the engine and overall quality. |
