Advantages: Luxurious, great off road, nice engine, big
Disadvantages: could be too big for some, not as much leg room in rear as I'd like
The car I will be reviewing is an 08 plate Range Rover Vogue SE that cost in excess of £80,000 back in May, and is now (due to the credit crunch) worth significantly less.
Let's start with the stylish. This form of RR has been around since 2002, but despite that it still looks relatively modern. I think it's time for Land Rover to update it soon, though, as I'm a bit bored with the look. It's got a lot of road presence (mainly because it's so big).
The interior is a great place to be. You have to climb into it (as it's so high off the ground), and once you're in your cosseted by large leather seats, and a great looking dash. There's wood and leather all around, and a lovely touch screen sat nav.
The rear has a decent amount of legroom, and would be comfortable for a 6 footer to spend a long time. LR don't do a LWB version of the RR, so you don't get electronically adjustable seats etc.
The car I've got has a V8 diesel engine, which generates a rather impressive 640NM of torque. The engine is quiet and refined, and gives a decent shove into the back of your seat under hard acceleration. Keep in mind, however, that this isn't a sporting car. There's little steering wheel feel (because it's so light), and in the bends this is a wallowy old beast.
Offroad is where it really matters, and luckily I managed to spend several hours on an offroad track in this. It really does excel here, and it's incredible the sort of angles this thing can climb up on normal road tires. Suffice to say, you wont be wanting for performance in this area.
Boot space is excellent, and you can easily fit in luggage for four people for a week.
Overall, the RR is an icon to Britain's motoring heritage. It's big, yes, but it's sophisticated and comfortable. Long live Jaguar Land Rover
