Advantages: Unbeatable ride and comfort.
Disadvantages: Pricey repairs, niggling faults.
I had always liked the Renault 25, and so bought one 3 years ago. It was a 2.0 TX 5 speed model. Firstly, I found it to be the most comfortable car I've ever sat in. It was like your favourite arm chair. The ride is equally comfortable and smooth, with first class road handling. Even though a big car, the 2.0 engine had great acceleration, and came into it's own on the motorway. It overtook with ease, and felt very safe and solid. Fuel consumption was surprisingly good, too, managing 25-30 mpg round town, and about 35-40 mpg on a run. It's well equipped too with electric windows and sunroof on basic models, and electric everything on the V6 and Baccara models. I had some gripes, though. Spare parts can be extortionately priced. The 25 does have a tendency to need a new driveshaft every once in awhile. I needed two in the year that I owned mine. Two friends who also owned 25s, had the same problem. Auto boxes are very often a nightmare on the 25 as well. My two friends have both had replacement auto boxes for theirs, and still had problems with them a few months later. A transmission expert told me that Renault can't build a decent auto gearbox, that's why they go wrong very often. And, of course, when they do, the cost is enormous. Even a re-conditioned one costs at least £600. So, the manual version of the 25 is the safest choice in my opinion. If you get one that has been scrupulously maintained, and not been round the world ten times, then you may do well. But, stay away from old auto's, turbos, and workhorses. Even though cheap now, the cost of repairs will clean you out.
