When a friend of mine bought a Renault Clio sport, I laughed. Why? Well for one reason it was a 'Renault' sports car and the second was the price......more than a Lotus Elise. However, after he kindly lent it to me for the weekend, I changed my mind totally. The car is awesome to drive and the massive 3.0 24-Valve V6 engine roars along the motorway, leaving all the Vauxhall Astras and the Ford Mondeos of the world, way way behind. The engine sounds terrific and delivers 230 BHP. However, having such a big engine in such a small car usually means a car that is amazingly quick. I still remember how the original Clio catch my eye with its superior dynamic good look, well packaging and built, plenty of space and fairly competitive price. No wonder it won the European Car of the Year in 1991. The Renault mk1 Clio Williams must be mentioned. Some people regard it as the most exciting hot hatch ever built - people even rate it higher than the mighty Peugeot 205 GTi. At normal speed, the engine does not differ from the standard 140-hp unit very much, just the exhaust noise is louder so there a nice purr from the tail end….
