Advantages: seems to run on petrol fumes alone

Disadvantages: no poke

I've recently bought a P reg (1997) Megane 1.4e RT (with optional electric pack) and am absolutely delighted with the cars economy and general all round build quality. My previous car was a Mazda 626 1.8 GLX which I was naturally quite reluctant to part with (impeccable reliability) but it was heavy on juice and had expensive Group 14 insurance. The Megane is only Group 4! We've just got back from Disneyland Paris so have driven over 1000 miles in a week on a staggering £65 worth of fuel. That works out at 59 miles to the gallon! I thought I'd worked it out wrong, but no. OK the car has no poke at all in first and second gears but once you get it up to speed it will hurtle down continental autoroutes at 75-80mph all day for fun.

I am glad I am not the only one who experienced this. I bought my Megane 1.6e RN Saloon (97-P) second hand at around 54k miles. One trip I made from Central Scotland to Southern Wales, I hit the magical 59mpg also. People tell me I'm crazy and that a petrol car *CANNOT* do more than 45mpg. The best of it was, that involved me stopping twice on the journey, and sitting at 80mph (shhh) on the motorway, so not at the "economical" speed of 60mph!
Further, the car always wanted to sit at 80mph, the bloody needle points straight up, and thats where it wants to go!
I am now switching to an 98-S 1.6e RT Sport Coupe (had to sell my other Megane), and I am looking forward to similar fuel economy.
Also, on a bad average day, I'd get 35mpg, on a good average day, 45mg, depending upon how heavy my foot was that day!
