Renault Clio 1.2 3-door
by ns_87 I bought an 06 plate Renault Clio from new as I wanted a small and relatively economical car. Had I been writing this review last year I'd have been singing the praises of this car and wondering why French cars get such a bad reputation. That was until I fell victim to what I now know to be a relatively common problem (not that Renault ... has at any point sent me any warning or advice regarding this issue). I was on the motorway, driving at the speed limit, when a faulty bonnet catch allowed the bonnet to open of it own accord, smashing into the windscreen and completely blocking my vision. Luckily I managed to get the car over to the side of the road, but I dread to think how it could have turned out. A truly terrifying experience. The car was towed and a few weeks in the garage and £1900 of repairs later (replacement bonnet, windscreen and roof) it was returned to me. Not that I felt happy driving it. A quick Google search revealed plenty of documented cases of this happening, the matter has even been on Watchdog. Looks as though Renault take no responsibility for this, stating that if the catch is regularly greased (does anyone do that on their cars, regardless of make or model?), then there shouldn't be a problem. Just sounds like a severe case of sloping sholders to me. I also had a friend who had a Clio 6 months older than mine that has just recently been blighted with electrical problems, fails to start and will often cut out when driving. He spent nearly £900 in the Renault garage trying to get it fixed, but it is still suffering with the same problems. It sounds as though these issues are also quite common. However, in the interests of a fair review, I will highlight the good points about this car but I would never recommend that someone buys one first or second hand. The car is very comfortable and quite nice to drive, even on longer trips. Although, as mine is a 1.2 engine it isn't fast or exciting, but that's to be expected with this sized engine. To buy either first or second hand they are quite cheap and mine has passed every MOT to date first time round (but it is only 5 years old). For a petrol car it is quite economical, I think I get about 45 mpg on average. There are many cars out there that are much cheaper to tax, but this one isn't so bad, about £130 for 12 months and it is also ok to insure. For a small three door car I find that mine is quite roomy and the boot space is large enough to actually be of some use. However, this car is still small. Read the complete review |

Renault Megane in general
by scgoldie I own a 54 plate 1.4 Petrol Megane Hatch. The first thing to notice is the key design: funky and cool using a card rather than a traditional key, it garners interest. The key is inserted into a slot, and a single button starts the engine. Newer models have keyless ignition wherby the key merely needs to be in the vicinity of the ... car. Once in the driving position the cabin is roomy with sufficient headspace for taller drivers. The seat is fully adjustable for height and recline, as is the steering wheel. Lumbar support is good, even on long journeys. The dials up front are large and clear, with the on board computer offering trip, MPG, fuel consumed and range. Ride is smooth yet responsive. Steering is light, sometimes very light. The clutch is easy to use and brakes sensitive without being too sharp. Wear and tear is not exceptional, but is expensive to maintain. Lightbulbs are not generally user replaceable, as the access is acquired through a blanking cap under the wheel arch. Likewise, the battery is covered by a plastic cover that can only be removed by an allen key. Boot space is good, with plenty of space for golf clubs or shopping. Rear footroom is adequate but not exceptional. MPG is good at 37-40Mpg depending on driving style. I have been able to get 45 on long motorway journeys. Overall a solid hardworking car, but expensive to maintain. Not recommended for new drivers or those on lower incomes, as the upkeep is not cheap. Read the complete review |

Renault Scenic RT 1.9 dCi
by emmad5689 My owner purchased me in March this year and paid £1450 for me, I was manufactured in 2002 and I display a 52 registration plate making me around 9 years old. I sit parked on a concrete drive away from the perils of the roadside waiting my owner and our trip each day. He approaches me and opens me up with the button on his ... key instructing me to open all of my doors, I follow my owners command and he gets into me with his bag. Putting the key in my ignition he waits for my coils light to go out with being a diesel and starts me up, I start first time despite my age I am extremely reliable and have never let him down yet. He pulls me off the drive carefully to avoid scuffing my alloys on the curb, my owner lives in a very narrow road so this is always something to watch for him and we slowly pull up the road with me locking all the doors at the magic number of 6mph, I like to keep my passengers safe. We pause at the top of the road, check for traffic and away we go, being a 1.9 dci I have the power my owner was looking for but can still get off the mark at a decent rate. Some days we pick up passengers and some days I am parked up outside his uncles house and left for the day, I am safe to leave with my central locking preventing any doors being accidentally left open and my immobiliser means there are much easier cars to break into than myself. Once we have collected our passengers all three of them with their bags and boots we are off to work, I have plenty of space for them all to sit comfortably although they may not be quite so comfortable if there were three adults trying to sit in the back seat as my middle seat in the back is narrower and really would only be comfortable for a child. I have lots of storage space for all their little bits, I have storage in the rear under their feet and along with the glove box I have extra storage on my dash plus in the central compartment. We get to the main road of our journey, a 70mph road and I speed up quickly and efficiently without causing any hold ups, I originally could do 0-62mph in 14.8 seconds but I cannot guarantee that performance now at my age. My top speed is 99mph but my owner is a good man and doesn't push m e to my limits and at new I had 105 bhp, I am also economical and have the same tax group as his partners 1.3litre 2003 petrol model, I have a 60 litre fuel tank and it costs my owner between £70 and £75 to fill my tank and from this I can run for around 500 to 600 miles depending on the type of journey which is much better than his previous cars. On arriving at our destination down an old farm track which is extremely bumpy although I handle it with ease I am parked in the sun and sit shiny with my metallic green exterior and my matt green accents for the workday. On a sunny day I may get a little too hot and when the workday ends sometimes I can require some cooling to make travelling comfortable, this is no problem for me as I have 4 opening windows all electronic and air conditioning for those really hot days, I cool down quickly to allow a comfortable journey home. I have some nice little extras too such as my boot opens in two parts meaning that when my owner puts his dogs in my rear they can be kept safe whilst allowing them some air at the same time. My electric windows can be locked so the children cannot play with them when they are travelling in me although my buttons for the windows in the rear are very close to the floor meaning that when correctly strapped in the children shouldn't be able to reach them. I am made for comfort for my travellers, my headrests adjust and they can also be totally removed when the eldest childs car seat is put in, my front seats recline as well as being adjustable forwards and backwards for the different leg lengths that may want to drive me along with my height adjustable steering wheel. I also have the usual warnings for my driver such as you have left your headlights on or you are running low on fuel, I tell my driver if one of the little munchkins takes off their seatbelt and have the usual trip computer and mpg recorder. I am even if I do say so myself a really good car to this family, I am very reliable and I save them money from their previous cars, being a diesel I am great for the long journey to and from work and at the weekend I provide comfort and safety for the whole family. I was well worth the money spent and hope I have a long life with this family. I must also add there was once a brother scenic before myself but unfortunately a accident with black ice on a 70 road lead to his demise, after numerous spins at 70mph and crashing into fencing my owner was unhurt although my brother went to the scrapyard in the sky you can be assured that in the awful event of an accident I am here to protect.
