Advantages: powerful,cheap to buy secondhand
Disadvantages: unreliable, poor image
I had a V8 Rover SD1 years ago whilst at college. Bought very second hand this was the biggest mistake I've ever made in a car. From the outset it was very unreliable, every time I took it out something seemed to go wrong with it. Fuel consumption averaged about 18mpg and boy did it rust well. These cars were launched in 1976/77 as an executive car, powerful and well specified they looked like a real match for the BMW 5 series. However reliability and quality problems soon cast a shadow over this car. It suffered the same fate as so many other Austin Rover models, mediocre quality and poor brand image led to falling sales and very low resale values. This led to the downfall of this car. It was hardly fit to cary the Rover badge that had graced it's predesessors the P6 and 3500TC, these were quality executive cars that had a good reputation.

- 02/01/03 The 5-series didn't exist in 1976/7. The early SD1 were ropey cars with mainly electrical problems.
The last of the SD1 (1984-1986) were so good though the Police asked Rover to do a run for them as they wanted to keep using them.
The Vitesse if you can find one is about as much automotive fun you can have for £1500 and that's for a mint one. |

- 12/01/01 John - it's a pretty good summary of the poor old SD1 - I've owned two. What you don't mention is that when they work (which isn't very often) they're pretty good fun to drive - especially round wet roundabouts... |

- 12/12/00 Hi John
I only gave you a "SU" rating, as you haven't really told me anything about the car other than it was a rust bucket, unreliable, and drank petrol.
If you could be a bit more specific about its drawbacks, then I'll gladly come back and rerate.
Regards
