The Rover 400 was a saloon version of the Rover 200 in the MkI stage. It had the same K-series engines as the 200 and was equipped exactly the same but it was a saloon. The breakthrough came when the Honda Civic platform was given to Rover. They made a better replacement for the 400 and with improved, more powerful K-series units. The saloon and hatchback did exceptionally well in England. Sales of the 400 replacement, the 45 are not as good, because the car is now outdated and needs replacing.
