Advantages: Extras, Handling, affordability

Disadvantages: tapping noises, depreciation on a lengthy scale

I recently sold my rover 216GSI and bought myself a rover 416GTI (auto). The car was first registered in 1990. However, the car has some excellent accessories for a 10 years old car that cost me just over a £1000 with full rover service history.

The car comes with a full leather interior, four electric windows, electic mirrors, PAS, electric sunroof, electric aerial, alloys, ABS and a Cobra Alarm and Immobiliser. These are truly remarkable extras, for a car which also has the Honda desgined Double Over-Head Cam engine with 16valves as well.

As for the drive on the car, well that is truly remarkable as well. It has a much stiffer suspension then my 216gsi and shifts from 0-60 very fast even though it has automatic transmission. The car is also very spacious for a GTI and has good passenger and luggage space and comes in 4 door specs, making it a family car with a sporty image.

Infact, the one thing that makes this car even more remarkable is the automatic transmission. To find an old GTI in an automatic transmission is rare. Soo rare infact that when i advertised it in the loot to determine the value of the car, I had several people who were desperate to buy it because it was an automatic. You may wonder why? Well one person in particular wanted the car so that it would suit his boy racer image, and also wanted something his wife would be able to ride in comfort, what better than an automatic to suit the needs. Therefore, the resell on these cars are good as long as you pick up one in good condition at a decent price.

I would defintiely recommend the car to anyone but would put out a note of caution. It is hard to find a 416GTI in good condition with Service History and good body work and interior. If you are looking to buy be patient and choose wisely. Also most rovers with automatic transmission have a tendency to make a loud tapping noise when starting from cold. Till this day my mechanic has not been able to figure it out.
I had the problem on both my rovers, although 5 mins into the journey the sound would be gone. If anyone has any ideas please add information in the comments section of this opinion.

In simple terms, if you are a student who has just passed your driving test and wants a cheap sporty car with a lot of extras for an affordable price, then the 416 GTI's the car for you.
