Retro Metro - still a runner! (Rover Metro)

Advantages: cheap to run, easy to fix Disadvantages: wouldnt want to crash, poor boot space Similar to the review below, i had a Rover Metro Rio Grande in royal bluey green. I bought it because it had low mileage when my first car (a Corsa) was stolen. I have to say, i only bought it to last me through the first year at university however it still sits at my parents house 6 years later! It was a M reg; I found it a very good car. Mechanically I only every had issues with the battery connections (which was a cheap fault to fix) and rusting on the wheel arches and some rusting on the joints which hold the roof up - neither of these were significant enough to fail an MOT or cause any real worries. My father fixed any minors problems and always commented on the fact that spares were riduculously cheap, that the lack of electrics (ie windows/posh lights in the car) meant that inside the bonnet everything was easily accessable and that it was easy to maintain with oil/water etc. I would say an indication of the sturdiness of the car is that I never really bothered to take any care of it either in terms of maintainence or specials such as waxing and the car just continues to run and run! The petrol is cheap and because its a 1.1 litre it lasts forever and the interior is comfortable. The only down points were that there were no airbags due to the age; the radio was rubbbish, and as someone else said, the boot is rather small if you need to put any buggies etc in there. As a runabout its perfect but i would recommend for moterway driving, it struggled to hit 90 miles an hours and after i reversed slowly into a wall once and say the massive resultant damage i would not want to crash this at any speed. A great first car. Summary: Perfect first car
