My mother got her first MGF three years ago and within two weeks both wing mirrors had fallen off and the rain had leaked inside the drivers door. At 9000 miles both front tyres had worn to below the legal limit due to to a suspension problem. But, all credit to Rover, they sorted all these problems out and the attentiveness of our local dealer was nothing short of brilliant and the best i've experienced. I think the design of this car is spot on and it's a great car to look at but its build quality is atrocious and bearing in mind this can be a 20K car, that's not a good thing. Sadly, all my experiences with Rover Group cars have been unfavourable so I ... Read the complete review

Since we brought the mg in winter 98', it has leaked with the slightest amount rain, leaving you annoyed and confused why it does this. One reasons can be found in the sleaing of the hood. The front clips are often postioned wrongly, and thus a little gap is left. The spec of ours was the 1.8 lt This is the current specification for the MGF : 1.8i 1.8i Steptronic 18.iVVC Type: K Series Position: Mid-mounted transverse Head/Block material: Alloy/Alloy Main bearings: 5 Cylinders: 4 Configuration: in-line cc: 1796 Bore x Stroke (mm): 80.0 x 89.3 80.0 Compression ratio: 10.5:1 ... I took an interest in the MGF as soon as I heard of it and went to Silverstone for a classic car meeting in 1995 when I learned that a pre-production model would be on display. To my engineer's eye that car was very close to production spec and I resolved to buy one. I waited until I could sample a demonstrator before placing an order for a VVC, with the consequence I had to wait 11 months for delivery! I collected it in January 1997, was instantly besotted and still am to this day. A hopeless case! However, all was not sweetness and light and whereas I never suffered any of the usual problems one reads about, it did like to visit my dealer's ... Read the complete review

I've owned my MGF from new (Dec 98) and, yes, I have had some major problems, but I believe they are getting better. I have driven my car every single day and it has stood outside in all weathers. Yes, there are some leaks around the windows, but I've seen that happen on all convertibles, from Escorts (my dodgy past is showing me up!) to Porsches (OK, I own up, it wasn't mine). Within a week of owning the car a windscreen wiper dropped off, the following week the power steering failed, after a year the engine used so much oil it was replaced (at 20K miles) and recently a clutch pipe has gone. BUT it hasn't put me off.....the feeling when ... Read the complete review

A friend of mine bought an MGF 14 months ago and it turned out to be a real banana. Out of that time it has spent 4 months in the garage for various different problems. The engine was noisy, I know with it being mid mounted you expect some noise, but this was appaling. After having the car for a month it was returned to the dealer for 3 weeks only to find that it was no different. The hood was far from adequate and unless it was garaged, it would every time it rained, soak the seats through. The idea of having that flappy thing to put on the hood when it was down, the cover, did not fit. Again more time spent in the garage and most of it was when the weather was nice ...
