Advantages: Styling
Disadvantages: Poor build quality
I've owned my MGF from new (Dec 98) and, yes, I have had some major problems, but I believe they are getting better. I have driven my car every single day and it has stood outside in all weathers. Yes, there are some leaks around the windows, but I've seen that happen on all convertibles, from Escorts (my dodgy past is showing me up!) to Porsches (OK, I own up, it wasn't mine). Within a week of owning the car a windscreen wiper dropped off, the following week the power steering failed, after a year the engine used so much oil it was replaced (at 20K miles) and recently a clutch pipe has gone. BUT it hasn't put me off.....the feeling when the sun is shining, the roof down and the stereo blasting just can't be beaten. Driving through country lanes on a summer's day in an MGF is a wonderful experience. The only criticisms I had of the original design were lack of leg room - even at 5'8" I find my knees against the steering wheel - and lack of electric mirrors. Both these things have been resolved in later models - adjustable steering and electric mirrors are standard on the 2000 model. The onther thing that makes the MG unique is the friendliness of other drivers. The tradition of waving at other MG owners still stands and I'm sure if you were stopped at the side of the road in difficulty another MGF driver wouldn't drive right past you. Enjoy!!
