My partner purchased an MGF several months ago.
Being a car enthusiast, I was aware of the problems that many owners had experienced, and tried to disuade her from buying. She went ahead and bought a twelve month old average mileage car - solely because she thinks they look fantastic. Whilst I agree they look cute (allthough very girly)that is about all they have going for them.
The car is underpowered -(quite how considering its size and engine is beyond me). The build quality appalling (I don't think they could make the panels out of thinner metal and the facia out of tackier plastic.
Common problems include leaks (we have had none). Petrol smells in the 'cockpit' (all the time) and tracking problems (Two front tyres required). Up to now though the cost of running has been light.
There is certainly a sense of camoradery amongst 'Fers', who regularly wave (especially when the hood is down)- some may think this sad, but I rather like it - Only the same as two bikers nodding as they pass one another.
A great site, with loads of info on problems and F related chat is www.mgcars.org.uk
I must conclude that the car is tacky and built badly, but does have a smile factor that is missing in many other motors - o and theres that badge
